Metal Gear Solid V Selling Very Strongly and Pushing PS4 Console Sales, Japanese Store Manager Reports

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is finally out on the shelves worldwide, but how is it doing in Hideo Kojima’s Japanese home turf? According to the store manager of the popular indie store Games Ma-Ya in the Edogawa district of Tokyo, it’s doing great.

In a series of posts on her own blog, she recounted the performance of the game in its first few days on the shelves, and the report is definitely positive.

Sales started strong on the first day, with an atmosphere that was almost like a festival. Not only the game sold strongly, but it also pushed PS4 console sales. A customer even purchased the standard edition, the limited edition, and the PS4 bundle at the same time.

High sales continued in the second day, and the manager expressed surprise on how popular the PS4 version seemed to be. On the third day the PS3 version started to move nicely as well. It probably won’t be able to catch the PS4 version, but sales are going to be strong on the long run.

The PS4 version of The Phantom Pain led by far everything else even on the fourth day, with very high daily numbers. Word of mouth on the game is spreading, and the manager noticed many customers that she didn’t see before, meaning that stocks of the game are thinning at big retailers.

Interestingly Tango Gameworks’ Alessandro Silvestri tweeted that at BICQLO in Shinjuku (an enormous megastore that merges BIC Camera and UNIQLO), the PS3, version, the PS4 version and the PS4 bundle of the game are all sold out.

Well I have to admit that PS4 Red bundle is amazing.

I'm excited for the numbers, hopefully ps4 sold 30k+ at least

I'm thinking that PS4 will be around 20k. Maybe more

Looking forward to numbers.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

We'll have to wait for numbers to see how many consoles it actually pushed. I predicted 35k.

I'd be surprised if it's not twice that.

At least we'll have Media Create / Famitsu so we will not have to wait for VGC numbers.

Looking at the COMG! numbers, the PS4 version of MGS V had the highest point total of any PS4 game in Japan, and by a reasonably significant margin. It should also be noted that unlike Dragon Quest Heroes and Bloodborne (two other games that massively pushed PS4 sales), interest in MGS V spiked significantly during its final week, which suggests that the spike in PS4 sales will be higher than it normally would, since people would have less time to buy a PS4 beforehand. More so, the sales of PS4s due Dragon Quest Heroes was somewhat cut off, because of the sales of the special edition several months before the game was released. So with that in mind, I'm guessing around 55,000 PS4s for the next Mediacreate.
