Forums - Microsoft - Brilliant - Why backwards compatibility matters!

It suddenly matters now after they had it on the Wii and PS3 (60gb).... But Microsoft is doing it now so the media are gonna milk it big time and make it seem all new and innovative.

It was on X360 as well and the media is milking it because there are still millions of people waiting to transition to 8th gen.

All I can say is--for a couple of days, the PlayStation Vita suddenly had full BC for all of the PSPs digital games. People were jazzed until they found out it was an accident and the games suddenly disappeared.

It was a big deal, then. For me it always was and always will be. As long as a console is BC with games people actually want to play.

LOL really? Did it actually work? If so, how could they just shut it off? Sounds like an awesome feature.

Anyways, to whoever is talking about used prices, why would publishers care? Is Johnny Gamer going to buy a used copy of Borderlands to play on his Xbox One? Maybe. If he doesn't have an Xbox One and wants to play Borderlands on the 360, is he going to buy a used copy? Maybe. Either way, is the publisher going to see money? No. But can they sell Johnny Gamer DLC in either scenario? Yes. So why not open the doors for Xbone owners to use the games and sell them content? As you say, the gamer is going to buy used anyway.

I agree that the publicity is good but I still don't think BC is a big deal.

BC isn't going to help much on sale...

BC should have been there when people were thinking about trading off their Xbox 360 through promotion to get a discount on new Xbox One purchase.

Apparently Vita is fully backwards compatible with PSP and PS1 classics.  The only problem was (I assume) the rights to certain games.  I actually purchased about ten games on PSP physical UMD discs but I decided digital was the way to go.  Repurchased most of them as digital games. I bought probably 50 PSP games--I'm just guessing-- in digital form.  A lot of them weren't available when I made the leap to Vita.

One day, EVERYTHING was available!  People were doing backflips, taking have at 3DS, etc. I actually bought a few games and managed to redownload my whole library.  About a day later, somebody at Sony just have realized they made a mistake and took the unauthorized games away.  If we got them, we could keep then but those who missed out got burned.

I'm still happy about it!

A library of PSP games would have been awesome on the Vita. I'd probably own one. Have been on the fence for awhile.

Glad you realize that the gaming media are biased bags of shit....

If you take a look at amazon USA sales or sales data from europe or the NPD's since E3, we can only assume that BC was nothing to most people who have yet to upgrade. It has no bareing on their decision and is a complete red herring... used similarily to all the "cloud" talk back at the start of the gen. If there is one thing MS is good at it is marketing and buzzwords "Azure", "Cloud", "Offloading".... it is kinda sickening that there are people who take these things for fact.

Almost three years in and there has been minimal use of any cloud tech....nothing you could really tell any difference between if it was just normal AI etc.

Then they show this "Hololens" (another great buzzword) and the media and MS portray it as some amazing tech when the viewin area is absolutely tiny..

It is all rather pathetic but hilarious.

I know that they can play the games that they own...

But, the BC capability will alllow them to direct sell DIGITAL versions to people who have sold their old copies or new people to their old content.

Remasters have a significant cost to produce if done right.  Most games may not really gain much from a remaster.

They can. However, I can buy a used copy of Gear of War 2 for £1. Are they going to sell Gears of War 2 from their store for £1?

This was my thoughts. You only need to look at how much a lot of the Virtual Console and PSN older titles are.
