Forums - Nintendo - StarTropics 1 and 2 coming to the eshop in Europe. Takeda's influence on Nintendo growing?

Hey guys and gals

After my last failure of a thread (http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=207547), now a thread about some REAL games coming to the eshop in Europe this week (I hope!):

Sin and Punishment (N64) (9,99€)

StarTropics (NES) (4,99€)

Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II (NES) (4,99€)

While Natsume stated a while ago that it was unlikely we would see anymore SNES games coming to WiiU ("At this point, it's unlikely we'll see any other Natsume SNES games coming to the Virtual Console, as Nintendo's interest has moved onto other classic systems"; Edit: thanks Rol for the correction), with GBA (and other platform) releases potentially being more lucrative, we are receiving two more NES games this week. Not just any two NES games, mind you.

The two StarTropics games were, in fact, directed by Genyo Takeda, one of the two new (temporary) CEOs of Nintendo.

My question to you:

Is this the first time we see Takeda's new found power guiding Nintendo into a certain direction? Or is it just because these games are two of the few still missing Nintendo published NES games that were released on Wii virtual console? (But then where are the sequels to Adventures of Lolo on WiiU?) Any thought? Go!

Nintendo made no public statements regarding which system's games they plan on releasing going forward. That the SNES is done was an assertion by Natsume.

As for this set of games, I wouldn't read anything into it.

Yeah, I remember now that it was them commenting on the SNES VC and not Nintendo.

So you think it's just a coincidence?

It probably is, and I do believe so as well ... but on the other hand, I think it would be a wise move to promote Takeda's games at this point in time if they were to make him (the only) head of Nintendo at one point.

With Iwata Balloon Fight got a lot of attention, which it would probably never have gotten if he wasn't the head of Nintendo. Don't get me wrong, I like Balloon Fight, and I'm grateful for what Iwata has done in the past, but it isn't exactly Mario or Zelda. But...  people got to know Iwata better because of his association to the game, so that he was not only the president anymore but also somebody who knew what it meant to develop games.

Takeda hasn't received the same visibility as a lot of other Nintendo key people have received, although he has always played on important part in the company. By rereleasing some of the games which he worked on in the past now, people may start associating him with these games as well, strenghthening his persona for the outside community.

But that's just my two cents

NES games shouldnt even be 5€/$6.

Saw a playthrough of it (I had never heard of StarTropics before), and he did it in like 1hour and 18 minuets or so.
Game looks really old and dated and not really that fun.

There are so many better games you can get for the same amount, from Steam or GoG.

Steam has the biggest amount of shovelware against way too high prices lol.

Err... thread? In any case, I understand that you feel that €5 is too much for an NES game now, but you have to realize that these games cost about €60 in the past. So in some respects, it's quite a decent sale prize - that is if you waited long enough and are old enough to know that these games would have put you back €60 back in the day. Also, they cost €1 on WiiU if you bought them on Wii. So there's that. Also I prefer playing on my WiiU, rather than on Steam or GoG, so it doesn't matter to me that they sell cheaper games on there (they aren't selling NES or SNES games on there, that's for sure).

But I do believe that VC games could be cheaper. If they were to ask half or a quarter of what they're asking I would probably buy many more of these games and a lot of peolpe with me. But that's a personal thing. There are people out there that are willing to pay €5 for these games, and that's what keeps the prices up.

But wouldnt you rather spend 2€ on a game like Trine 1 or 2 from Steam, than Support Nintendo and pay 5€ for StarTropics?

Seriously StarTropics for what it is, shouldnt be more than like 1$.

vs

IMO there are so many good games for 5€ or under, that a NES port of a game shouldnt cost anywhere near that amount.

I'd rather play Trine 2 on the game pad (for €10 sale price)

And I'd rather play StarTropics than Xenocide (also about €5 on Steam)

Yes, clearly Takeda is now free from Iwata's oppression and can finally release StarTropics on Wii U. Things are looking up!

StarTropics was really fun when I was was a kid. Worth $5? Better than Trine? I dunno. I know it captivated me a lot more when I played it a few decades back than Trine 2 did when I downloaded it upon Wii U's launch. I don't think many will have the debate of StarTropics vs. Trine.

I am not a fan of Startropics, but it easily beats the omnipresent boredom of the Trine games. If people had to pick one or the other, I'd advise them to get Startropics.

Seriously.

Trine is a snorefest.

There haven't been any new Startropics games since the second (as far as I know). The first Startropics was one of my favorite games growing up in the 80s; I loved the music and the atmosphere. It was challenging to be sure, but I had a lot of fun with it.
