So then don't play as those characters ... like I don't understand why you feel you need to play as them. I don't like Vega in Street Fighter. Never have. Used him like once. I don't care that he's in the game though, that's just ridiculously anal retentive over a silly thing. So what if you think a character is "useless", no one is forcing to play as them.

It's not about whether or not I think all of the characters are useful or not (which in a roster as big as Smash 4's is impossible). I elaborated in an edit to my last post, but basically, it's still the idea of less is more. More characters is not better. More characters means more problems. More characters means more and more move sets looking like others. More characters means, inevitably, certain characters will simply be better. It is damn hard to keep a fighter balanced already when there are 15 or less fighters. I don't want or need 50+ characters. It's stupid and becomes entirely redundant, and to me, it shows poor game design in that the focus shifts entirely to fan service over logic and general quality.

Yeah, it may be harsh, but I think Smash has taken a few steps backwards since Melee, which is disappointing to me. They still got my $40 for Smash 3DS, and an additional $10 or so for the DLC characters, but I just regret every subsequent purchase because I barely touch the new characters after a few days because my mains are just better. I couldn't possibly care less if my way "would take fun" away from other people because it would mean an overall higher quality experience in general.

Almost anybody I know that plays any fighting game at all, whether it be Smash, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, what have you, they find a character or two they're good with and tend to use them essentially always. Yeah, a different character may get used here or there, but most people focus on getting better with a select few characters, both to take on higher tier in game challenges, and to be able to compete online as is the case with any fighting game basically from the past decade. Now YOU may not play that way, but I assure you, you are in the minority. Or maybe you're just assuming you use more characters actively than you really do. Even then, there is no way even playing that way that you can say you fully utilize a 50+ character roster and that it needs more characters just because your fan service needs haven't been entirely fulfilled.

I love how you apparently know me better than I know myself, and also know how EVERYBODY who has ever played Smash plays it because you know a few people who play fighting games.

I favour Link, Bowser, Toon Link, Ganondorf, and Wii Fit Trainer as my most-played characters, with Pit, Palutena, Marth, Kirby, Mario, Donkey Kong, Shulk, Pac Man, and Mega Man coming up in the second batch... but there's only two or three I don't seriously enjoy playing as (I still enjoy it, but only once in a while). And while the "serious gamers" out there might try to become experts in one character, I'm quite confident that many people who play a little more casually would just enjoy picking characters, often at random, to play.

Beyond that, if Layton were available for Smash, he'd probably be one of my most-played characters. Not just because I like him as a character (that's not why I play as Bowser, for instance), but because just about any moveset I can come up with for him, I thoroughly like, so I expect that a moveset Sakurai and team design for him will be exceptionally good.

So again, just because it's how YOU want it to be, doesn't mean it's how EVERYONE wants it to be. You want a tight little fighter with just a core set of playable characters with specifically-diverse movesets. I want as many characters as possible, for greater variety (I'll play the game more if I get a more varied experience), and I'm even happy if EVERY character gets a few clones. Heck, I was kind of wanting Sakurai to make it so that every moveset applies to two characters. Mario/Dr Mario, Pit/Dark Pit, Marth/Lucina, Link/Toon Link, Zelda/Hilda, Sheik/Impa, Ness/Lucas, Fox/Falco, Snake/Betty (from Battalion Wars), Pac Man/Mrs Pac Man, Luigi/Mr L, Ice Climbers/Paper Bros, Peach/Daisy, Villager/Pete (from Harvest Moon), Sonic/Shadow, Pikachu/Pichu, Captain Falcon/Jody Summer, Ganondorf/Ghirahim, Donkey Kong/DK Jr, Charizard/Dragonite, Mega Man/Zero, Ryu/Akuma (Ken as an alt for Ryu), Layton/Wright... I think you get my point by now. And to be clear, it's not (just) about fanservice. It adds more variety to the game (the cloning means they can add many more without having to do twice the work).

We all know we'd rather have Wright and Maya anyway...but this would be cool.

I want Layton and Wright to both be in the game, as semi-clone characters. They have a lot of similar gestures and the fundamental idea behind their games are similar - solving a big mystery by solving a heap of small mysteries, with a sidekick with their own abilities.

But I fear that Capcom won't be getting another rep for a while, at least. Maybe if enough other third-parties get reps, and maybe Bandai Namco and Sega get a second one each, we could see a third Capcom character.

Layton would be so freaking awsome, his music is sooo good to. PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN

Iv never played the games, but ill download any smash character dlc

#MAKEITHAPPEN!!!!!!!!

The more the better!

Pocky Lover Boy!

That could be a very interesting addition to the already awesome cast.
But please Nintendo, Bayonetta :(

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

Mehh, Layton is cool but not that cool to be a playable character on Smash.

Maybe he'll be an assist character or his costume (and voice) will be availabe as Mii dlc.

I am inclined to believe this.

I remember a similar situation occurred with the voice of Shulk.
Also people were very skeptical of Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt Duo and even Ryo joining the Smash roster but they still came true.

I think Layton would be a unique addition to the roster.

In that case, I hope Phoenix Wright is added as well. That would be infinitely hilarious.
