I know that some studios make prototypes or tech demos to prove they can do it. That's how Mercury Steam got to make Clive Baker's Jericho, because they made a tech demo that impressed Codemasters, who hired them to make the game.

That is not what makes all this Metroid project an example of bad management. It's because after a failed game, a game that failed because of the many internal problem within the studio, they decided to embark on what basically was a suicide project. Because, do you really, honestly, believe that Nintendo would put one of their most known IPs in the hands of a studio they never worked with?

Yeah, sure.

Im failing to see how this is in any shape a 'suicide project'. Nintendo put Metroid in the hands of Team Ninja, a dev they had never worked with before, likewise the same with Zelda with Omega Force (unless both devs had done something before).

And how do you think Nintendo is going to to start forming a relationship with a studio they have never worked with if they dont work with them?

There is nothing lost in trying. They probably thought they had a good pitch and it got rejected. Now its a new game instead of a Metroid game.

Absolutely nothing in lost in this since they are still making the game (apparnetly) just not framed as a Metroid title .

And honestly, the Metroid series is so currently in flux that Nintendo doesnt even know what to do with (hence their new 3DS game) that MerSte probably thought they had a chance to impress, on top of the fact that Nintendo is working with external devs on other projects.

Difference here was that Koei Tecmo remembered to take Nintendo execs out drinking, then ask!

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
