Forums - Gaming - My take on Rise of the Tomb Raider after the Gamescom demo

I just watched the RoTR 13 minutes Gamescom demo and I must say that this game is a more of the (bad) same of the prequel.

- Animations for me are an important part of a game like this and they are very bad, there's no connection between them when she climbs, when Lara is escaping from the collapsing temple it looks like she's jogging and everything felt unnatural and mechanical;

- Lara keeps moaning and talking in an annoying way, and it wouldn't be so bad if the voice acting was decent, but no, it's painful to hear it;

- It seems there's going to be a lot of QTE again, I counted four or five in 13 minutes and there was no need for them, it makes you feel like developers are always holding your hand;

- About holding hands, for being a supposedly open world game it was VERY linear, like there was only one way to get to the temple and it was always the same stuff, climbing onto collapsing things and jump quickly with a cheesy slow motion stunt;

- Discovering the tomb didn't give me no sense of mystery at all, pretty much no exploration, it just looked like a one way roller coaster full of traps;

+ Only good thing was the graphics, nice to look at but competitors did a much better job in my opinion (I'm looking at you Uncharted 4).

So, it's pretty much what I was expecting from this game, a huge blockbuster full of destruction and explosions without a soul like the prequel... How I miss the original Tomb Raiders...

I guess I'll try out the game when it will be 5 euro on Steam.

For the record, this is the link to the demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJQwDnoRueU

I liked the reboot game. But it lacked something compared to Lara's long lost American cousin Nate Drake. I quite like re-playing Uncharted. But with TR 2013 once I finished the game I put it down and have not for a moment felt like running through it a second time.

Same here, I didn't hate the game, but it didn't give me a lasting impression after the end. In fact I don't remember it very much, I finished it in auto pilot mode.

And it even prevented me to get the platinum because of the unnecessary multiplayer, damn you game!

It has multiplayer?

Great. No rush in playing it. The reboot was an okay game for me and if this is more of the same, then I can wait until it gets discounted.

I felt the same.  One playthrough and that's it.

All valid points and I agree with them tbh. I was actually suprised to see that people actually cared about Tomb Raider (after the XB1 deal was announced), to me it was an alright game nothing special. However it still looks like fun to play and i'll most likely enjoy it like I did the reboot whenever I eventually get it.

Yep, and as you can see a forgettable one.

So what's the lesson here?

SE/CD screwed up by going with MS, the smallest franchise fanbase.

MS screwed up by buying timed exclusivity for a franchise that had a solid reboot, but not massively must have break out successful reboot. The idea if this sort of franchise grab is that you get an influx of franchise fans who would have bought PS4, but because they want the game NOW! they will buy Xb one. But it seems the size of the franchise fanbase willing to drop PS4 in favour of Xb one just for this game is a fair bit smaller than MS might have thought. Interestingly, I think a similar thing can be said about the Xbox fanbase for SFV. Sony isn't really going to gain much from the money they spent on SFV, unless they think there's a cross over of fans with TR and SF, with SF exclusivity being a bit of a defensive move.

Well, yours is the first "negative" preview I've read. Most others praise the game, say it's a much improved sequel.
And I really liked the 2013 reboot, it was an excellent game, almost my GOTY were it not for GTA. I've played and replayed it several times, and am planning to play it again.
Too bad I need to wait another year to play it, I am sure it will be an awesome game. Unfortunately, it might underperform this holiday season sales-wise, too much high profile competition along with launching to a limited audience.
