Forums - Gaming - Should video games be made available in public libraries?

I was just thinking about this. Some of my fondest memories as a child was going to the library every week to take out books and movies. I've seen and read so much because of that, and I wouldn't be nearly as educated and cultured as I am today without that experience.

But then I realised that many people had a similar experience as I had with my local libraries with game rentals. I never had the experience of renting game after game at Blockbuster, but the experience that is described is always similar to my experiences at my local library. That got me thinking about it, though. Why aren't there video games at most public libraries? There are books, audio books, DVDs, Blurays, VHS, Manga, Comics, cassettes, CDs, etc. It would allow people of all ages to experience game after game without financial burden, and learn from them.

Video games have more than proven themselves as a respected enough medium to be worth the addition to your local library. I can't imagine how different I would be if I could take out N64 games every week from my local library, and I think that's something that would seriously benefit children today especially.

Actually, I have seen games for rental at a library back in my hometown when I last visited. The selection was small, but it was surprised to see games available. Perhaps there are other libraries that also have a section for games.

Still has a a stigma, but so does movie and tv. Plus kids use the library to learn about sex. In the end videogames still waste time and rot the brain, so I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

who the fuck thinks kids use the library for learning about sex^^?

Hell yea! Its a shame that most libraries don't have them yet but hopefully, we will get there

Mine does..!

I can get a whole 'library' of games... from PS3 to Wii to XOne and Wii U games. No handheld games though

Actually, the reason why I only own 3 Wii U games , despite playing so many, is because I borrow them from the library. Really awesome.

I got games through my local library system a few times when I was younger. Usually the wait times really were not worth it. I'm talking hundreds of people ahead of you in the queue for one or two copies of a popular game that had already been out two years. Although it would be nice if they became popular, the issue is less games themselves and more the price of stocking games. Libraries already often struggle to keep the newest literary releases in stock, and only the most well off libraries get movies when they're brand new, whereas most wait to pick up a used copy or three for cheaper. Stocking multiple copies of games that cost $30 or $40 would wreck what little extra budget they may have that they tend to allocate towards events to get people to come to the library more to begin with.

In the long run, I'm sure libraries would love to stock video games as a major part of their collections if it was financially viable. Libraries that stock them to begin with recognize the appeal and are lucky enough to have the extra budget to provide them.

a lot of libraries already do carry video games.

You could say that about all library rentals. You're aware that there are already methods inplace to discourage that, right?

Don't do libraries carry video games already?

With that said, none of the libraries in my area carry any, but I don't think it would be a bad idea at all.
