Not unexpected but now we know for sure

Sounds like they could maybe do something similar to last year's Sony pre-TGS though.

Microsoft won’t be at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which runs from September 17 to 20 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, the company announced. 

“2015 will continue to provide an attractive game line-up, exclusive titles included,” Microsoft Japan category marketing group’s Masayuki Inoue said in a statement. “This year, Microsoft will not exhibit the Tokyo Game Show, but we’re making various preparations to deliver the latest Xbox news to fans and media. We will provide an update as soon as we can.”

Going by Inoue’s comment, it appears Microsoft might be preparing its own event for Japan. Stay tuned for future updates.

Well, it's Microsoft and a Japanese focused game show. I'd be more surprised if they put on a presentation acting like Japanese gamers cared about the Microsoft brand.

Yes, they've tried quite hard in the past.  They've bought plenty of Japanese exclusives over the years.  Bill Gates was the keynote speaker for the very first Xbox TGS appearance.

When I went to TGS 2008, they had a very strong presence there. Then, they were trying to establish themselves in Japan. Fast forward 7 years and it's clear, even to Microsoft, that Japan is not interested.

Good. They've given up on Japan which is something they should've done years ago. Japan isn't worth MS's time and effort because no matter what they do, they will always fail there.
