They did say Sony made them an offer they cannot refuse.

But keep in mind that they gave them a really good promotion for the PC version, and that good word of mouth could give them nice sales for the holidays from new PS4 owners.

Not enough to make up for 1.2m potential missed sales.

Nah, there's got to be more to it that makes them figure that it's financially worth it. Something tangible and something big.

I'm certain it is not 1.2m missed sales. If it were 600K it would be an exaggeration.

I mean, I myself would not have paid €20 for this game (and would have been mistaken, of course). I would have waited for a 50% off sale at least.

But still, the payment was certainly a few million, plus some future draft picks.

EDIT: And I see a physical release for it in the future, might get some PS+ folks to double dip as well.

It's alright.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Do you know what other PS game needs a sequel?

Calling All Cars.

Who else remembers this beauty?

It was a PS+ title though. Kind off a shame though, because unless Sony paid them an insane amount they could've made more money with a regular launch.

Thats true, but at the same time if people had to pay for the game, there may not be anywhere near these numbers.

Either way I have ps plus and have already played for hours. So much fun to play online.

I've played it for ~3 hours today, really addictive game, but unfortunately I totally suck at it >_<

...It is though. 1.2 million players did not buy the game. Those sales are missed. They never happened. With Rocket League being a primerily online multiplayer game, I doubt even .01% of players didn't download it for free via PS Plus.

Which means Sony had to make up for that somehow to make it worth it.

I didn't explain properly...

If it were not free for PS+ owners, many of them would not have actively paid for the game.

There are around 12 million (or even more) PS+ subscriptions, so 90% of people did not even bother playing a free game, now imagine how many of the remaining 10% would pass on it at $/€ 20.

And, yes, of course it is a online game, so it is doubtful that many people would pay $70 (sub + game) if it were not free. Just to play this game. But now, a newcomer might pay $50, as he will not only get this game, but at least three more this month and about 30-40 more in the following 11 months.

So, I do believe that Sony paid them a lot, but it certainly wasn't at a projection of 1.2 million (my guess 2 million by the weekend), but most likely at a lower install percentage the game would have gotten if it asked for $20.

I doubt that either Sony or Psyonix are unhappy about this deal.

I have it on Steam for PC and have yet to successfully get an online match going. I understand server issues opening day, but even last night, I could not get in a game. Stupid fun game though, it is like the Splatoon of...whatever genre this is supposed to be lol.

Uhh that's not how this works... The same way that piracy =/= lost sales.

OT: The game is great but I haven't been able to get into a multiplayer game yet, probs searched in matchmaking for 2 hours or so all in all. Will be playing it flatout once the sort the servers out :P

Yeah it's busy alraid, servers are down constantly.
