I think it started with the reveal. Remember how it was first showed? Well, you don't because it was announced at a developer interview at E3 2014 only open to some media... After that, it was destined to fail.
Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

1. Splatoon was marketed a hell of a lot more
2. Splatoon is part of a more appealing genre (at least to the mainstream)
3. Splatoon, in terms of visuals, is generally more appealing to most people
4. Splatoon was reviewed much better
That's pretty much it. There was more demand for a new Nintendo shooter IP than there was for a new Western-styled SRPG.
I agree with what everyone else here said, but I think the marketing was the largest difference. Splatoon's was HUGE while Codename STEAM's was virtually non-existent.
