"I do think that consumers find a sense of security in having the physical thing, and given that, I think the option of the physical thing always needs to be there. How that manifests itself in our future development we’ll see."

Yeah thats pretty striking.  I don't think the NX is a physical thing.  There I said it.  In the future the NX platform is a digital servidce you play  on PlayStation 4 and your save files (or rather your pypsical attachment1) is the Amiibos that you use to save your progress.

Not happening.

Reading through OP my first thought was Amiibo as game keys?

I don't really think that would happen though. Reggie shows at least a basic understanding of why people buy physical. It's not just about collecting stuff and having a glorious shelf to show off. They're afaid of data-loss, of actually loosing their game and not being able to play it anymore. Physical is safer because it wont just vanish off the face of the earth if a publisher says so (looking at you konami). His quote implies that he understands that. So an actual physical NFC key to a digital game is not very likely IMO since it would accomplish nothing to relieve those concerns. It's literally just a collectors Item.

He also makes it clear though that he thinks that thought is absurd. It doesn't happen. Digital games are more secure than physical games, not less.

He might personally think that it's nonsense, but his consumers don't. Given that he follows that statement with saying there always needs to be a physical option, I don't think we will see any kind of physical Item that does not actually contain the game.

At least not as a solidary option. Absolute furthest I could see them going is to produce limited special edition physical media for people, with concerns as to preservation and a special NFC imtem for the collectors. I still think that's very unlikely though. I guess we'll see.

Well, I've been going through the digital world lately and it's fantastic. Sometimes a game is hard to find, but to download? no problem!

I'm not sure how a download code card would fit Reggie's description.

After the PSP Go, I highly doubt the next handheld will be a digital only system.

Kind of off-topic, but I wish Nintendo would release digital versions of some of their older Pokemon games. Take Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver for instance, there are no digital versions, and all of the original physical copies sold through, so now used copies of the game sell for $40, the cost of the game when it was new: http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-SoulSilver-Version-Nintendo-DS/dp/B0038MTE7C/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1435000057&sr=1-4&keywords=heart+gold

OT: Nice to see that Nintendo doesn't plan to go all digital.

Again, that isn't how I read that at all. In fact, it makes me think they will push for digital harder than what I initially thought. I initially thought only the NXDS would be all digital. Now, I think the whole thing might be all digital, including the console. The "physical something" will just be there for those that want it.

I would be all for an all digital console so long as storage space was substantial. Granted, I've lived with a 32GB WiiU without an issue this gen. Only had to remove one game and did chose to buy many games via disc due to the limited internal storage. Did not want to mess with an external HDD.

That's what I'm saying, though. He never specifically mentioned that they would be carts or disks. The fact that he even brought up that "we would see" how they would handle it in due course makes it sound like they are changing how it currently is being done. The NFC point was a wild guess that suddenly became way more tame.
