I went through the HR Contest and got at least 1,500 with each character. Surprisingly, my high was 1,800+ with Sonic on my first try with him.
A good tip is to throw the bat at the bag a lot. As the bag is rebounding around the enclosure, it's pretty easy to catch the bat as it bounces back, and be ready to toss it again and repeat. I'm sure there are more in-depth ways to do it(bat tossing+other moves), but it's a simple way to get at least 1,500 with each character.
