totally agree steven787 - it's funny that a company that has had it's one year start wiped out by one competitor and the other is eating into that head start every week is claiming supply issues.

They've sold a lot less than Nintendo in a year extra so where's the supply strain? you've gotta wonder if this is true how many man hours go towards the whole RROD issue.

As Xbox will have this issue to keep at bay for a while yet, PS3 is riding high on BR victory alone without it's massive games to come out and Nintendo now the market leader and no price cut yet it's looking bleak for the 360 I feel.

Eating into it's head start? Maybe more like ant nibbles LOL..PS3 has only gained 39+26K=65k the last two months, 360 is 5.8 million ahead.

Even if PS3 continues winning, which is highly unlikely, it will NEVER catch 360 at that rate.

You do realize that the biggest lead the 360 had was 7.5 million. But now its at 6.72 million. .78 million it has cut into its lead already. But nice try sharky.

Are we talking about USA? This is a NPD thread, I'm pretty sure we should be talking about NPD's.

I see it as a "360 supply issue" thread... BECAUSE IT IS! (which supply issues count towards global demands)

What's so hard to understand about this supply problem? Because it's not selling Wii numbers it can't be supply constrained?

Nintendo planned their production around what they were selling last year, which was significantly higher than what they expected when they launched. Similarly, MS planned their production from what they thought would be an incremental growth with a relatively large spike around Halo 3. They were wrong, 360 sales grew noticeably following the price cut and Halo 3. So they simply didn't plan to produce this much because they didn't think demand would rise so much. Keep in mind that they plan this stuff months ahead of time, so if there is an unanticipated rise in demand, it takes months to catch up. Look at Nintendo. It's been over a year and they're still trying.

Well there you have it pooper. Microsoft underestimated the STRONG USA demand for the Xbox 360 resulting in shortages.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

So basically, people and MS are saying that MS expected XB360 to be outsold by PS3 from 2008 on?
And that MS expected XB360 to be destroyed in sales by the Wii on holidays?
Well, these explanations basically destroy every previous PR they did.
One of those, the PR or this explanation, is a lie. Which is it?

They even contradict themselves in the explanation: they say fixing the supply issue may require 2 months at most, and they talk about resolution in April... which makes 3 months.

I also realize that MS still like to make people believe they are incompetent fools.
Of course, I don't believe they are.

talk about Halo 3 when sales are bad... I have a feeling we may be hearing this from MS for quite some time.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

starcraft, be honest now. Do you REALLY believe that sales in November can effect supply in Feb? Seriously now, if they are airshipping consoles to retailers, how is that possible? It doesn't take a month to make a console. The 360 is selling the least in Europe, and doesn't even exist for the most part in Japan. How is it possible that they are having shortages?

You know this is a load of crap, just like we knew Sony was lying when they said the same thing last year. What do you want them to say seriously? "The Xbox360 isn't selling that well right now. We don't know why, maybe people are fed up with RRoD, maybe we are past our prime. I dunno dog. But Sony is definitely handing it to us."

If they are airshipping consoles toretailers, you know there was a serious shortage.  Do you know how expensive that would be?

Microsoft should consider only selling the XBox 360 Elite and XBox 360 Pro.
The Arcade and Core XBox 360's should both be withdrawn from the market, they clearly do not sell well lots of stores have too many of those two models available and the customer demands the Elite and Pro XBox 360 models.
What is the point of having 4 different XBox 360 models on the market? it creates so much confusion with the customer.

Maybe they are just waiting for the piles of Halo3 Special Edition XBOX360's to sell out first?

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'
