...How can you say that it doesn't confirm anything? He literally said, plain as day, that the system they said publically that they were working on publically, which is the NX, is a home console. That's a hard confirmation.

But here's another hard confirmation from yesterday by the director in charge of Metroid Prime.

"If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console."

NX console. Not hand held. He even specifically referred to the Wii U in the preceding sentence. It's confirmed. Hard. Twice.

Well the metroid prime one certainly is a lot more of a confirmation then the quote in this thread so you should certainly put that in the OP. They have said publically that they were working on their next home console before the NX even got mentioned so the quote in the OP alone doesn't really confirm anything but the quote in the OP + Metroid Prime Quote can certainly confirm it

Looking at recent years

Wii
Reveal: E3 2005
Release: Nov 2006

3DS
Reveal: E3 2010
Release: Feb 2011

Wii U
Reveal: E3 2011
Release: Nov 2012

Has Nintendo ever fully revealed and then released a console in the same year? At least they haven't recently.

Never for a home console! For handheld console only ds(In NA and Japan)!

From a thread of mine!

The dolphin(codename of the gc) was teased in 1999(third year of n64),was revealed at E3 2000,presented at E3 2001 and released in november 2001,Revolution(codename of the wii) was teased in 2004(third year of gc) was announced at E3 2005,showed at E3 2006 and released in november 2006,Nx was teased this year (2015,third year of wii u)Announcement at E3 2016?Probably as ninty said that we will just get details for it in 2016,release november 2017?

Also,Project cafe (codename of the wii u)may not followed exactly this trend, obviously because wii was selling tons of units but partially it did it since it was announced in E3 2011 and released in november 2012,i.e an announcement in E3 and a release one year and half after of it,So that't a proof too!The only difference is that it wasn't teased in its predecessor third year but in the 5th of it(It's apparent why,wii was a beast) and in the year of its announcement at E3...

None of that is "hard confirmation". If you want true confirmation, wait until Nintendo makes their direct that officially announces the NX and what it is. As it stands, everybody guessing it must be a home console is completely forgetting that when the NX was announced, Nintendo said it wasn't going to replace any of their current hardware, but rather supplement it. They had that vague infographic and everything that effectively told people nothing. "But a guy who isn't really all that involved with Nintendo game development anymore thinks the NX is probably a home console!" That is as much speculation on part of that person as every other thread about the NX on this site.

That's not true. They didn't say it wouldn't replace current hardware, and they definitely didn't say that it would suppliment anything. The exact words were that it wasn't "a simple replacement to the Wii U or 3DS." Not a simple one. That just means that it's not just a regular iterative tech upgrade. It's based on a new concept, that concept being a unified platform with a unified gaming library.

The NX home console and the NXDS aren't simply replacements to the Wii U or 3DS respectively, they're apart of one, singular, unified platform that is a replacement for both at the same time.

They never said that anything would suppliment anything, so I don't know where you got that from.

Nice to know, hope it's great!

Yeah, pretty much this.

I'd be a little surprised if we saw Nintendo's next console before their next handheld.

We still might not. I still think the NXDS will launch either along side the NX in the Winter or in the late Spring/Summer of next year. They'd just announce it in a January/February Direct/Investors meeting.

Can we trust that?If yeah,I'm relieved, vindication,Now I'm able to speculate freely for the release date as I can stop putting handheld console as scenario which is mandatory, because we must be cautious/inclusive when we don't have many clues! You're acting like you were the only one who believed that is a home console! They have never teased a handheld console!
Actually the handheld console sayers was the minority...
Also,I will stop putting the hybrid or family of devices scenario!Spema weren't you from the supporters of that?

You will win vgc only if it releases in 2016,the battle is 2016 vs 2017 believers(I'm in them),not handheld console vs home console believers!:P

P.s so 3DS successor is  surely 2017(Not that if it was the NX I  was considering the 2016 release year) and onwards, of course if what you quoted really proves that it's a home console!Which I hope since it's what I was expecting!

The NX being a home console doesn't dispute it being part of a family of devices. It just means that the NX is the home console variant. I'm 100% sure there's an NXDS as well and I'm 90% sure that will launch in 2016 as well.

Winning VGChartz is referring to the fact that in January of 2014, after that financial briefing, I specifically called that that the Wii U would be replaced by a unified platform of systems launching specifically at Holiday 2016 and that would replace the Wii U and 3DS. I wasn't talking about it being a home console vs. handheld. I thought, and still think, it's both.

I don't really get it?You say  family like''NXWIIU'' ''NXDS''?It depends on how you mean family of devices(Two well-known  people here define it,as several devices for each taste and I think you don't say that!)

We know that there will be unified os/account system(And in my opinion the handheld will be an optional controller for the home console) e.t.c that doesn't imply a hybrid!Hybrid means shared games, are you adopting that?Explain it to me,I can fathom what you claim but I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding!

How it's both while NX is a home console?

Possibly.

That would be a pretty close release between both handheld and console.

How it's both while NX is a home console?

One library of games, one OS, one account system, cross save/buy/play. Two separate peiced of hardware. One home console. One handheld. Both play the same games. The NX is the console brother. The NXDS is the handheld sister. Reggie and the Prime guy are talking about the NX. That's what I mean.

Here we go. this is the picture I was looking for. This was shown at the same time that the NX was announced. It was one of the slides during the conference. As can be seen, Nintendo doesn't seem to see the NX as a Wii U or 3DS replacement. Rather, it seems obvious that the intention is to supplement their current hardware lineup with some unifying piece of hardware that will likely lead into their next generation of gaming hardware. Basically, it can be seen as being intended to be supplemental rather than any kind of full replacement.

If it was intended to be a straight up home console, it would be made as a Wii U replacement. Nintendo isn't going to pull a dumb move like trying to support three dedicated devices at the same time, but they also didn't seem ready to accept the idea of phasing out their current hardware during the initial announcement in March.
