DX has been a big part of windows gaming way before Sony even released there first console and since the console market was growing, MS tried to buy out Nintendo and implement DX with Nintendo's consoles, The big N said no, MS went to Sony and Sony said no, MS tried to buy out Sega and Sega said no, so they basically made there own console which became Xbox (Direct X Box) Sega's spiritual successor.

Actually, DirectX 1 launched in 95, PS1 launched in 94 in Japan...and IIRC, more or less, DirectX was pretty much irrelevant until DX3. Games on PC back in those days were using mostly software renderers, with few forays into OpenGL territory when Voodoo launched, and some botched attempts at 3D cards like S3 Virge, which I happened to have at the time.

So what the point of having it if you can just as well built a even more powerfull pc?

I hope that really happen, but then again they will be facing STEAM on PC gaming platform.

Exactly and thats why i think MS would do this.

Atm they are losing their gaming image on PC to steam and on the console front they are taking a bad beating by Sony.

If they keep on this path they risk losing their PC side of gaming to valve for good and losing the console War since they are trying to fight 2 sides that they dont need to.

By MS merging their Windows Platform and making Xbox indepentend from hardware and instead part of Windows this would be the perfect way to fight both battles. Since they could then keep all their exclusive games exclusive to Their Xbox store on Windows 10, And with MS fully backing and marketing their own" Steambox" Type console as much as they do with the X1, id imagine 3rd partys would be all over it since this would be their best chance of pushing a 1 platform system and we all know thats what they want.

If MS finaly return focusing on PC like you said, who is going to win on PC platform , Steam or Windows gaming platform?

Whats the point in having a console at all if you can just build a more powerful PC?? 90% of the biggest selling games are 3rd party games so why dont people just go and build a pc to play them games in better quality??.

Maybe ease of use? not having to worry about parts working or not working? having a warrenty for the whole system? maybe it might end up being just as cheap to buy a MS Windows10Box as it would be to build one? maybe even cheaper? since they would be getting build in bulk so parts would be cheaper for a manafacture who orders millions of components and gets a discount for ordering in massive bulks then a user just ordering one of each part??.

Macs still exist and so do consoles, a good chunk of people prefer a closed system with exclusive software and content made by the hardware manufactor. Microsoft allready owns windows so putting windows on xbox there is no point for this console to exist then

It would be a though fight but id imagine if MS went full in and made the Windows gaming platform a must have service with lots of exclusive games and with an exclusive Halo+Gears+Forza+Fable+ whatever 3rd party exclusives they get plus with heavy marketing i believe they would beat out valve and take over steam.

but i think even if they are not comming back to PC, they already won , (Direct X, Windows ) most games that coming to PC require Windows or i could say Direct X, and Developer pay for the API. Not just that all component on PC require third layer OS like Windows or Linux or mac OS, and Windows is the most popular.
