I agree, essentially, it would require a team working on Smash Bros throughout the expected life time of the Wii U and beyond. It would also dilute the product for the next eventual Smash Bros release.

We don't need another smash within the next 10 years, this could be it until forever.  Honestly, Brawl had some big problems.  Slow pace, bad online presesence, tripping, poor character balance, etc.  Smash bros 4 is more tight, faster, more competitive, no tripping, more akin to melee, more characters, amiibo support, better online presence.  The only big problem with smash 4 is that there is no Subspace emissary and then again that's not really all that big a problem. 

As for too many characters, Dota, Leagues, WOW, Skylander, Disney infinity, all those games are fine with so many characters and their business is thriving.  For someone who plays a lot of smash, and for a community always looking for a challenge, new characters presented every 6 months is not a problem at all.  Perhaps for all those who have not been a smash player since 64, but the more core smash players will continue to buy the gane characters. 


Why do we see annual releases of Infinity or Skylanders?

Its about the Money.

 

As good as Smash 4 is, Nintendo will want one of their top franchises available for distribution on their next console.


We see annual releases of these games because they really aren't that good, just money grubbers taking up little childrens' parent's money.  And that's fine, but Nintendo is Nintendo.  They place value into their games that annual releases do not.  Nintendo releases smash games over half a decade from the last iteration.  If that were the truth here, the next smash game would be far along the end of the NX lifetime, just like the N64.  It may even just skip the NX since we have had one just so recently.  It would be around year 2021 when we would get the next smash.  I mean, it's been 6 years since brawl.
