Forums - Gaming Discussion - A comparison of the ratios of good games to bad games on 6 consoles

I was sick and tired of people saying wii has a higher ratio of bad games to good games so I made the following graph to show it wasn't as bad compared with others. Unfortnatly the graph supports their view.

Supprisinly their is not that much diffrence between 5 of the consoles.

This is a graph I made of the last 6 consoles.

It shows the metacritic scores in 1% of games increments across the bottem.

The Left axis is the rating.

Interesting. I was going to crunch some numbers and do a study on this, but hadn't found the time. You just saved me a lot of time.

Nice handiwork. This is one of the best user created graphs/charts I have seen in quite awhile.

I was pretty surprised how highly the PS3 and the 360 came out relative to their brethren. I would expect the PS2's to be a little lower than some of the other systems because the shovelware is larger than the triple AAA stuff. But man, the Wii did pretty badly on that graph. At least it has a lot of games on the high end. Shovelware ftw!

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

And here is the top 10 for each console.

The extra year for the 360 helps it quite a bit.

The same for the previous generation as well.

So the Wii has a slightly lower review curve than other systems. Still not the argument for a shovelware dump that its accused of.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Since the last update

7 games have been released for all the consoles.

3 new Ps2 games have been released.

This does not really affect the graph and thus a new one is not posted.

Very very neat chart, catprog!

It's insane to see that the Wii definately has the lower reviewed games by a very, very long shot (atleast in comparison to the average for the other 5 systems).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Interesting idea, but these distributions only matter if you plan to play (a) ALL of the games on a system, or (b) a COMPLETELY RANDOM SAMPLE of games on a system.

If you plan to choose the games you play with some eye toward professional reviews, personal recommendations, etc. (rather than at random), then the ratio of good to bad games doesn't matter AT ALL... as long as there are enough good games on the system (in terms of absolute number, not ratio) to keep you busy.

I don't care if there is shovel ware on the wii. Part of it is due to developers being unprepared for it's success and trying to cash in. As the library expands, developers will know that will not work well any long and stop giving it such a higher ratio of shovel ware...

As long as good games are made for the wii, I can pick and choose... ignoring lower quality games...
