Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Has Their Own Virtual Reality Headset and Uses Cloud Technology

Backing down on the AR segment already eh?

They spoke about AR and mentioned there will be gaming applications. They speak about VR now and about gaming applications.

Honestly seems to me like they're too afraid to back their own horse so they're prepared to abandon it on the fly if VR proves more popular (which it will out the gate).

This begs the question though - Microsoft, why don't you just combine the two?

Either way I'm not surprised by this. I'm also not surprised that they're promising hopes and dreams and the moon on this when they haven't really delivered on any of these technological advancements over the past 6 or 7 years. When was kinect released, anyway?

They're two very different things.  AR is already said to be its own device, not paired with Xbox and games, though it will have its own gaming applications like Minecraft as an example.

Hololense appears to be more about things outside of gaming than anything, and from everything ive seen it has been very impressive and has a lot of buzz going around it.  I would consider that delivering.

MSFT has said on multiple occasions that they have VR projects in the works, they always are working on new technology.  Some sees the light of day, others dont.  They decided to show this today.  As MSFT is a huge company it shouldnt be surprising that theyre working on both AR and VR and im not really sure why your comment is said in the manner it is

I just think that they have a decent track record of over promising and under delivering is all - there's things that I can tell you right off the bat about how these techs aren't feasible in modern society with how they plan to implement it.

And honestly, if they're trying to do both then there is no good reason why they don't make an all in one device.

That is a neat way of doing things provided they can make it work

Irides also does this with a technique called “likelyhood-based foveation” that renders higher quality parts of an image and ‘gracefully degrades’ others, all based on where the user is likely to look. It also uses a spherical mesh for said image. In a sense, this sort of mimics the human eye, and offers the user lower latency and higher quality at the same time.

So does it track your pupils at super low latency or are you in for a blurry mess when you look anywhere you're not supposed to be looking... The technique is sound, yet likely to look is anything but.

And I'm not sure what the cloud does when you suddenly turn your head. It either has to send a huge fov image several frames ahead all the time so the glasses can pick out a 100 degree field to display, or there will be some weird catching up effect. The glasses need to detect your head movement and display the correct image all in 13ms.
My average ping time to Bing is 30ms. Thus the cloud would have to be at least 3 frames ahead in a wider fov to compensate for the speed I can turn my head at and all the direction changes I can make in 3 frames.

Maybe make cloud gaming work as well as gaming locally first before attaching the much higher demands of a 75fps headset to it. Sounds like another tech project that works in the lab yet will be problematic out in the real world.

Everytime Microsoft advertise something with their new tech, it's always Tech based technology! for 2 fucking years i've been listening to this shit over and over again and it's really, really getting boring. No offense to the messenger

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/

What's boring for? they have research team for very, very long time, of course they research things.

Seriously, this news isn't even official news by MS.

And "Backing down"? researching new things is wrong now? or because it's from MS?

I honestly wouldn't mind some clouds over here, it's been a hot week so far.

But in gaming and VR where every millisecond counts? Nah, I doubt we are ready.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

"Now, with all of that being said, it’s worth remembering this is a research project. It might see the light of day or it might not and it either case it won’t happen to soon. Plus, Microsoft is much more likely to roll-out this technology in some future version of the HoloLens instead of creating a new VR headset."

The fact that OP should not miss this part when post the news.

Don't take what i said out of context, which i actually believe you did for a convenient purpose.
I am just tired of hearing about the cloud in almost all MS related news, wether it's MS who said it or not.
Using the cloud to boost the quality on a product seem to be another publicity stunt just as what they did with the XB1.
*Cloud* is boosted to create a false hype, it will only lead to dissapointment. I can see how Cloud can be a massive thing in the future.
But let's not forget that a big enough majority of the world doesn't have internet, as well as the majority of those who indeed have internet, doesn't have a good enough internet connection or broadband. If the VR with CLoud actually work, it seem unfairly dedicated for them with good internet.
Oculus rift might be on PS4 and XB1, and Oculus rift doesn't require a damn internet to work (A+)
