So I finished playing the main story of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon the other day, or as I think of it, the best 2015 3DS game no one talked about. The game was pretty awesome I have to say. Many mechanics are very similar to past entries and most work well this time around. Many of the new mechanics, specifically the Connection Orb and Move Relearner, are extremely streamlined and convient. Same goes for the Looplet and emera mechanic as well, which added a new layer of strategy to the dungeon crawling. While I would like to talk about the story, I don't want to have just a wall of spoiler text so I'll just say that it's a pretty simple yet charming story with a couple of twists. Though I will mention that I loved how your partner went all Persona 4 on the final boss and that ended up killing him/her/it.
But for all of these pros I do have a couple of cons I want to mention. First off, the Looplet and emera mechanic I mentioned earlier which I feel make the game a little too easy at times. Not much of a con but sometimes I felt like I only got through a dungeon only becuase I got lucky with an emera drop.
Next up, partner PP usage. Now this might be just be me but when my partner Pokémon basically stepped into the same room as an opponent they preceded to spam their ranged move (in this case, Water Pulse) until the opponent fainted or they were out of range. As you would imagine this required me to keep a steady supply of Elixirs and Max Elixirs on hand. And while you can choose which moves you don't want your teammates to use at any given time, I just wish that the AI would have more restraint in spamming ranged moves.
Last but certainly not least, my biggest complaint has to be the hunger mechanic. Now don't get me wrong I liked this mechanic back when I played the first game in the series (Blue Rescue Team) but man is it a pain now. Apprently dungeon crawling makes a Pokémon hungrier than a carnivore at a meat market becuase with essentially every third step you take your hunger meter (which maxes out at 100 unless you push it up that time with Big Apples or Perfect Apples) falls by one. And if you get carried away with wanting to explore, like I do, then you're going to see your hunger meter flash on the screen saying 50%...40%...30% etc pretty commonly. So basically, if you don't have a steady supply of Apples then you are going to have a rough time losing HP with every step when you're starving (moreso in longer dungeons).
All in all however, I really enjoyed my time with this game. Even though I rambled with the cons I feel the pros outweigh them and there are some okay methods to diminish the impact of said cons. If you're a fan of roguelikes, or Pokémon in general, I recommend giving it a try if you're seriously considering it.
