To be fair, they pushed splatoon pretty hard and even had a second marketing campaign in August for the big update and Splatoon was a complete shot in the dark. Yes, it wound up selling over two mill in a matter of months and is set to go over 3 mil easily but they didn't know that at the time. But the key here is that Nintendo is very much pinching pennies to keep their board happy with proffits. In fact, the relative cheapness of marketing in the fairly off-season periods of May, June, and August are probably part of what prompted them to go big with Splatoon's marketing. With XCX, they do face the challenges of 1) much higher marketing cost and 2) much more competition for mind share. So we'll have to see how they answer that. They could elect for a fast and loud campaign in the second half of November and early December, which could work. But it's hard to say what they'll do. Nintendo's marketing department is better but still relatively unpredictable.
