Sure, but each star is unique and collection is a key purpose of a 3D platformer. Also the average on How Long to Beat for the main story of SMG is 15 hours. The average for all play-styles is 28 hours.

A four hour long campaign mode would mean only 8 minutes per level (assuming the 28 level estimate.)

from what i've seen 8 min looks right to me.  the levels are very basic compared to mario galaxy.

We've really only seen early levels to be honest. Later levels can be longer. I mean in SMG you have stars that take only 6 minutes to get and stars that take 20 minutes to get. Gamexplain took about 5 minutes on the third level and said "they get more complicated as you go through the story mode."

From what I played, it didn't really feel yet like there are only 5 maps. Even just having 2 maps at a time during the Demo was something you didn't really feel because the map changes so much with the splattering.

@Spemanig: Did Evolve got crucified? If you want to compare Splatoon to any other game content-wise, that's probably the best one to do so as they have similarities on many levels. The main difference in the content philosophy is that in Evolve you have to pay for additional content while you get it for free at Splatoon. Evolve got criticized for it's moneygrabbing, but most reviews liked the gameplay and very few had anything to even say about the basic content - which means no bad thing to say about it. Since here the additional content comes for free, I don't think reviews or reception will be bad, as the things which went bad on Evolve are not present in Splatoon.

Evolve did get crucified. It also allegedly bombed. How much content did Evolve launch with, though. I'm 99% sure it completely dwarfs what Splatoon is launching with. Evolve also isn't the same situation at all. Evolve wasn't critiziced for a severe lack of content at launch. It was criticized for rampant microtransactions.

Reread my post, that's what I'm saying, too. To clarify since you seemingly didn't get my point: What I'm saying is that Evolve didn't have much more content at launch (at least it felt as if it didn't without any additional DLC), but that was not criticized back then. What was criticized was, as you noted too, the payed DLC and Microtransactions, which are not present on Splatoon, as here the content upgrades come free of charge.

Here is what i think of its early reception.

It won't matter.

i think it is fair to assume that things get more involved.  actually i really hope it is true because the levels shown look too basic imo.  maybe 6 hours is more fair but 20-30 is too much.

i didn't know the day 1 buyers get such little content. if reviewers are consistent this game will get slammed as they don't review non-released content.

honestly this is a good way to kill the community early. people may think 5 maps is enough when you only get an hour to play the beta but it will wear thin by hour 10. free is free but gamers are also impatient and critical.

i played all 3 hours the beta which had only 2 maps but wasnt even warm after that. There was not a single time any thoughts like" oh no, again this map..i want a new one". In the third hour it just started to make more fun because i got to know the 2 maps better.

As long as new maps are comming frequently i see 0 problems with the number of maps.

Btw: Did you ever played counter strike source? Most people played this game for years but mostly used the same maps over and over (dust2).

The number of maps is not the problem, the quality and non exisiting differences between maps would be.

I think they should have delayed the game at least a month, there is a clear lack of content and it will get better later but it will require space on the disc which the console is already lacking. Adding 3-4 more maps and 1 additional mode on the disc will improve the replayability a lot and reduce the amount of downloads required, the rest could added later, no problem on that.

The game is fun but it should offer more during launch.

i hope they support this game a bit longer. DLC every 6 month, with some payed and some free content, like PI is doing it with EU4. the people love it and its a safe way to print money

You're clearly a misunderstanding what I'm saying. Evolve didn't get criticized for a lack of content at launch because  it did not have a lack of content to have launch. Didn't get criticized because they added a lot of content; it got criticized because it was $100 worth of filler.

Well let's see, either way (release with frequent updates or delay it) you won't get the "full game" until August, so yes this a good thing as it gives us the option to start playing the game sooner if we want.
