Forums - PC - New PC Building

Hey guys getting a new pc in April, with some of my holiday cash. I dont really want to spend moe than 700 pounds. I need to be capably of running DoW, Crysis and anything new. Obviously I dont expect to be running crysis on top spec with my budget, but my friend has a 2ghz dual core and his runs it fine. I am getting the parts from Scan in Bolton,UK. I need a quad core CPU with the appropriate Motherboard. Power supply RAM 1 -2 gig What else? Prices and correct compatability. Will get my graphics card separatly afterwards. I'm not overly clued up on pcs but I need a new one for Starcraft 2, Soulstorm and Crysis. Thanks in advance.

@OP,

I'm not familiar with "Scan" is this a Brick & Mortar retailer in the UK? I just want to make sure you're going to get good prices. As far as I know retailers around the world haven't competed with sites like newegg and tigerdirect for a long while even after factoring in shipping costs.

I'm more than happy to help you out regardless of where you shop but I just want to make sure you're aware of these and are getting good deals on your parts. I will take a look at some parts and see what suggestions I can come up with for you.

First and foremost I will say if you want quad core you that means you want nothing to do with AMDs current offerings. So we already know you will need an Intel Mobo and Processor, which helps narrow our choices quite a bit~

edit:

Also it would be nice to know if you want SLI to start with, if you want to go SLI down the road with this rig, or if you just want to stick with one card. Given your budget we can go either way provided the place you shop has competitive prices.

Thanks pal. Yes Scan is a retailer local to me. Very popular, not too sure on prices. I'm itching to get my hands on my holiday cash.

Ok, for now I'm going to link to online parts. You should check Scan and see how they stack up price wise. I apologise but a lot of this is going to be in USD($) but google provides a decent conversion if you simply type "100USD to GBP" etc.. it will convert at a fairly recent exchange rate.  I'll try to do this myself when I remember to make it easier.

^ I said "etc"......BTW chopped liver? I think of you more has chopped "sqrl"....j/k... Or am I??? DUN DUN DUN!!!!!

Whatever you do, stay away from Vista. Maybe by service pack 2 or 3 it will be a tenable operating system, but it has been nothing but headaches on my new PC. Rubbish...

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Ok looking some things over I think the Core 2 Quads are probably still your best bet.

Basically Intel has two Quad core lineups right now, the Core 2 Extreme and the Core 2 Quad. The Extremes average at about 25% faster but are also about 400% more expensive. The suggestion I would make if you want to go Quad core is going with the Core 2 Quad Q6600, its not the fastest out there but its pretty high on the list and still manages as fairly reasonable (considering what you're getting) $280USD & $139GBP price tag.

Also I wanted to note that newegg doesn't have international shipping so TigerDirect is probably our safest bet for now. Hopefully Scan will have competitive prices and it will be a moot point but I'd rather build based on info from a site you could potentially order from than not.

Anyways the Core 2 Quad Q6600 is definitely my suggestion for the processor since you want quad core and the price doubles for the next highest Quad core from intel and it doubles again after that to get into the Core 2 Extreme processor line.

Oh and you'll need atleast 2 GB RAM to play those games decently...

May I point out that soulstorm is not a very hard game to run, it still uses the same engine as the original DoW, although I would reccomend Company of Heroes, it is an amazing game, by relic too
