Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Predicts Better Results for Xbox’s Business Segments in Next Quarter

This is ridiculously confusing. I found this website, which states that the quarters are each just a 1/3 of the calender year:

http://www.investopedia.com/terms/q/quarter.asp

Then Wiki says that in the US the quarters are:

  • 1st quarter: 1 October 2014 – 31 December 2014
  • 2nd quarter: 1 January 2015 – 31 March 2015
  • 3rd quarter: 1 April 2015 – 30 June 2015
  • 4th quarter: 1 July 2015 – 30 September 2015
Wiki also says than a Japanese Fiscal year is from 1st April to the follow 31 March. Meaning that April - June would be Q1.
But this is about MS so their prediction of 1.5 to 1.6B is actually for Q3.

A company can choose its own year end and thus the dates of its quarters.  MS Q4 is April to June.  Thats all there is to it.  It isnt even a little bit confusing, you are making it far mnore complicated than it is.  I have a company and my year end is Dec 31st, so my Q4 is actually Q4.

Yeah, I've got my head around it now, I was just baffled at what I thought was MS saying they'd make more money elsewhere in the year compared to the holiday quarter. But I was wrong, that's their Q1 which isn't mentioned. It would make it much easier if everyone used the same quarter dates, like everyone uses the same calender.

Anyone kinda wonder how long MS is going to stay in the business?

After almost 15 years they really have not made major inroads vs. Sony outside of the US, and it looks like Sony is back to being no.1 in the US too.

Maybe it's time to hang it up, cut a deal with Nintendo that puts Windows/Windows Cloud on their next-gen handheld and console, and stake them to compete with Sony.

X1 is still selling at a faster pace than X360 was. That's progress and I imagine profit. Why would they duck out of a growing market? Doesn't matter if they are number one if their Xbox division is profitable, which it is (correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't want them to leave the business and I doubt they will. The more competition the better.

Totally agree with Reim here. Why would they duck out? In a very strong 2nd place and (probably) profitable? I don't know the numbers as far as profits and losses, but in second place and selling nearly double the 3rd place console... far from life support. Of course M$ wants 1st place and they are fighting hard and spending a lot of money to get it... and failing... and that looks bad and definitely hurts the pocket book a little.. but they aren't losing any sleep and I'm sure in the long run (if not already) they will profit from the One.

I definitley lean Sony btw. A little light internet stalking would reveal that lol But my brother got a One and so now I'm going to be forced to get one so we can game together, and after playing on his... It's a nifty little console. It'll sit nicely on the shelf below my PS4 (:

Last year q4 was troublesome with sales drop and dekinect, so a growth is expected, but it's always good to see. I would love ps4 to sell 10:1 x1 but i want Xbox to stay around to keep Sony alert and release the games my brother and friends like.

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Theyre not making profit not even close with the xbox one.

they do. look at the q10 filling

btw:

the article is a bit misleaning. next quarter there will be a new surface. that will be the main revenue driver
but nevertheless, xbox will sell more than the 1.1m form last year

I don't think X1 will come anywhere close to XB360 LTD sales. MS benefitted a lot from that one year headstart + $600 PS3 launch price.

As did Sony. What I mean is, the lessons Sony learnt from launching late and too expensive enabled them to create the PS4 as it is today. More competition is a good thing and I for one prefer a Sony that has MS biting at its' ankles, rather than one with out.

Is it? They said the predict 1.5 - 1.6 B for Q2 2015 and Q4 2014 brought in 1.44B and Q1 brought in 1.8B. I'm right in that aren't I? So their Q4 2014 didn't bring in as much as Q1 2015. I thought that "holiday" season was massive for MS and Xbox and that's where it gets by far the most says in the year.

Just seems strange, unless I'm misunderstanding things.

You are and no they didnt.

They said that April to June 2015 will beat Q4 FY2014.  i.e. Q4 FY 2105 will beat Q4 FY 2014.

or to make it really simple... April to June 2015 > April to June 2014.

Oh yeah i forget MS start July 1 not April 1

I have trouble comprehending making 1.8 Billion dollars in a Quarter. That's just an enormous amount of money.

It is revenue... and it was 24% down compared with the same period last year.

If you sell 1 million Xbone in a quarter then you have a revenue of $350 million just from Xbone... so add everything else like games, live signatures, computer part, etc... and you will see 1.8b is not that enormous.

edit:
okay nvm some1 else explained it way more accurate

xbox live transactios and first party games are not in this segment
xbox live gold and thrid party royalties are

And i predict they will be wrong.

The pricedrop (or Xone without kinect) was in june no ?

Considering that surface is part of the same division, it makes sense.
Unless I'm mistaken?
