I think there will be around 70 cars at launch, according to a recent statement.

They'll add more cars later though, most are said to be free DLC!

Still a pretty small car list for a racing simulator.

Aside from Gran Turismo and Forza, most sims don't really have that many cars in them. iRacing for example, only has like 40 cars. Assetto Corsa only released with 35 (with more on the way).

Not since Driveclub ;)
That launched with 55 courses (25 locations) and 50 cars.
It's 77 courses (36 locations) currently, still close tie with the number of cars.
