Forums - Gaming - Mortal Kombat X Biggest Launch in Franchise History - Millions Playing

Mortal Kombat X launched this week and it's off to a franchise-best start, according to series co-creator Ed Boon. He writes on Twitter that Mortal Kombat X enjoyed the "biggest launch" in the history of Mortal Kombat, though he didn't say if this was in terms of units sold or some other measurement. We've reached out to Warner Bros. for clarification.

Thank you everyone for making Mortal Kombat X the biggest launch in MK history. You made the game FAR exceed our wildest expectations....!!

The game, including the console/PC edition and the free mobile version released last week, attracted "millions" of players right out of the gate, Boon went on to say.

The Mobile & console games have had literally millions of players getting online in a really short period of time, hitting our servers HARD!

Mortal Kombat X's release on Tuesday, however, did not go entirely smoothly. Boon thanked fans for their patience as developer NetherRealm works through some unspecified issues.

We love that so many players want to play MKX and are working (like mad) on all the issues some of you are experiencing! We WILL fix them!

The entire Mortal Kombat franchise, which debuted in the early '90s, has sold more than 35 million copiesto date. This number doesn't include sales of Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X is currently available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4PC, and mobile devices. The Xbox 360and PlayStation 3 editions of the game have been delayed and will arrive this summer.

Mortal Kombat is probably the only fighting franchise that will appeal to the more "casual" crowd. its easy to get into, hard to master, but fun to play either way. and its brutality and gore attracts the "dude bro" crowed, i mean how can it not? its fucking awesome. the last one was really good and brought back a lot of the players who used to play MK1/2/3 i expect this one to do the same.

it also helps that its one of the very few offline multiplayer games out there.

I wouldn't think its dead (I hope not because I love fighting games) but I do think something needs to be reinvented to bring more attention back to the genre.

Street fighter and Mortal combat are like the only big names when it comes to fighting games.
So ofc they sell alot.

(no im not counting Smash.... not a serious fighting game)

so you arent counting tekken?

Deserved, Netherrealm is the only fighting developer that I know that actually bothers to put a story mode in their fighting game.

Both KI and Super Smash Bros were highly successful this generation too.  Any fighting game is easy to get into unless you play competitively, that includes pretty much every fighting game minus Smash Bros.  I imagine SF5 will do well too.
