Microsoft has been working on a new streaming service for quite some time now. It all began with the “Rio” project which was later discontinued, and the story went on until December 2014 when word reached our ears that Microsoft is working on Rio’s cloud-based spiritual successor dubbed “Arcadia”.
Well, Microsoft’s efforts could soon pay off and if all goes according to our hopes and expectations, Xbox One owners who happen to participate in the Windows 10 Insider program might soon be able to stream their favorite Xbox One games on their PCs, tablets and so on.
Xbox One – Windows 10 streaming on the way?
A couple of days ago Xbox’ Major Nelson confirmed via Twitter that a new Xbox dashboard preview update will be released containing various bug fixes and refinements to existing features. Sure enough the preview patch arrived and surprisingly enough, one of the new “refinements” can be found under the System & App settings menu. The new option is called “Allow game streaming to other devices (beta)”.
The feature presents itself in the Xbox dashboard but it currently doesn’t work. Evidently the streaming service is compatible with Windows 10 devices, which means not a lot of Xbox One owners will be able to test it out before it is released, especially given the operating system’s current market status. However Windows 10 Insiders who happen to own the console and have access to the Xbox application for the Windows 10 OS might have access to the upcoming streaming service sooner rather than later. Major Nelson’s tweet already revealed that the next Xbox preview build preceding the official May update will add “new features”, and hopefully this means access to the streaming service in the beta stages of development.
Evidently the streaming service won’t go live earlier than Windows 10, but if Microsoft plans to make it available at the operating system’s launch then it needs to iron out all the flaws and “unwanted features” ahead of time. The best way to do this is to allow Insiders to participate in the project’s development, test things out and provide feedback.
Any Windows 10 Insiders among us? What would you say if Microsoft would give beta access to its game streaming service by the end of the month?
