I asked them if I could just get an external harddrive and download new game file and save data to there but they said I have to first download everything into system memory before moving it into the external harddrive. Is this true?

As long as the data in the system memory is not corrupted, you should be able to move everything to the HDD (including the game, DLCs, save data, everything).

You can also download and install the game directly to the HDD, there's absolutely no need to first download on the system memory and then move it.

Sweet! I rather not have to pay money to play some free dlc but I don't want to miss out when they initially release! I I'll look for an external hard drive now and delay fixing the system memory later.

Thanks again everyone for all your help!

Like Yoda said, the best option is to get an HDD with it's own power cord, the problem is that those are generally pretty expensive, and last time I checked the lowest I could find were 1 TB, which in my opinion is way too much.

The second best option at a lower price is this:

With that cable, you can use pretty much use any HDD without problems. I recommend this, haven't had any issues with this combo yet.

Cool! Also I tried testing if I could move files to my 1 GB USB from my system memory but it isn't possible from selecting the USB device. Will I be able to do this with an external hard drive that has a bigger size?

Also will I be able to run a future smash bro dlc that is on my external hard drive when the smash bros game file is in my Wii U's system memory?

1. So you can't access to your 1GB USB? If so, there's a possibility that neither the HDD would work propertly either.

2. Yes, no further issues.

1. I can access the usb storage. I just can't copy files from the system memory to it but that's because there is no option that lets me.

2. If I can run the future smash bros dlc on an external hard drive without having the game file there, then I'm good to go!

I know not everyone does but you should buy an external with it's own power cord rather than get one that is USB powered (if you can find one that also has a fan that is a big bonus).  Also I'll back up osed125.  I have tons of digital games and they seem to download straight to the harddrive (as indicated by the HDD access lights)

Did you format the 1GB stick (as with any format all current files on the stick will be lost)? If you have any Virtual Console titles any one of them would be small enough to fit on the stick.

As to your last question I am not sure.  When you say game file are you talking about the game save data file?  I may play on mine a little tonight and see if any of my titles are split (i.e. game on HDD save file on system memory).

I'm almost 100% sure it's possible. Back when I had the broken HDD I had the Wind Waker game on the system memory and the save files on the HDD and I don't think I had any issues.

I could also give it a try later just to be absolutely 100% sure.

That's a good deal on the y cable and thanks for the hard drive recommendation! I'll definitely add it to my potential Wii U hard drive list. I also love how the WD hard drive comes in colors other than black! I'll probably get a black one to fit with my TV and Wii U though

And regarding the separate files question, I'm wondering about dlc being in a different storage device than the main game file and save data and if the game would still run the dlc.

I just started my Wii U really quick and tested. I most have been confused with something else when I played Wind Waker, I can't move the save data or DLCs from the System Memory to the HDD. Seems like I'm only allowed to move everything and not individual stuff.

Thanks for checking! I guess this mean the future smash bro dlc will try to download into the Wii U system memory where my Smash bros game file and save data are even if I plug in an external hard drive. Looks like I will have to send my Wii U to Nintendo to play the new dlc.

I found pretty much the same thing.  i could delete just the game data from the game file while leaving my saves.  Not sure if when I re-install if the game data will move over to the external or not. I'll edit with the result. Not that that result does the OP any good since he can't get down to the folder level in system memory.

edit: You cannot split the main game and the DLC I tried with a table for Zen Pinball 2 and got the following message " The downloadable content cannot be used because it is saved in a different location than the software." cancle or delete. Perhaps Nintendo DLC would behave differently but I kind of doubt it. Sorry man sounds like you'll be sending it in unless someone else knows some work around or I'm too doubtful.
