Sony is acquiring the assets and patents of game streaming platform OnLive to bolster its own streaming efforts on the PlayStation console family, OnLive announced Thursday afternoon.
OnLive’s services will continue to operate until April 30th this year, and that includes OnLive’s Game Service, OnLive Desktop and Second Life.
OnLive adds that those who were charged for their subscription renewal after March 28 will be issued refunds.
The company did not disclose transaction figures, and didn't comment if any staff were included in the acquisition.
“These strategic purchases open up great opportunities for our gamers, and gives Sony a formidable patent portfolio in cloud gaming. It is yet another proof point that demonstrates our commitment to changing the way gamers experience the world of PlayStation,” said Sony Compute Entertainment’s VP of global business development Philip Rosenberg.
The company laid off its entire staff in 2012, eventually hiring back a skeleton crew to keep the service running.
