It's... not an April fools. It's a legit article/interview

I can vouch for Ka-Pi on this on. It's featured on one of the articles on the left site of this site's very own home page.

"At the time, Xbox thought that the core market was going to be casual. They were going to be the casual gamers' machine. Now, that's why they approached us because they said 'we think you've got something that competes in that Mario space and we think Mario's the thing to kill ... We see that space. We want that audience. We love Oddworld so why don't you get on this bandwagon? And we might give the box away'," Lanning explained to GamesIndustry.biz.

"So now you're like, 'look, if you're going to give the box away, you're going to win. If you're going to win, we want to be on board'."

Seems like Lanning got conned into an exclusivity agreement ;)

And then Microsoft made a 180 and offered the Xbox for overpriced €479.

His view about the much understandable skepticism about a new studio for it's time is rather crude. It's very successful now though. I still don't understand why he thinks people (including the ones working in the gaming industry) found the association of windows and Xbox a bad thing.

Especially since MSGS had been making games for over a decade before that and some of the most famous franchise.. Age of, madness, simulator etc...

I don't believe you : P

MS was already giving the Xbox away for free almost, that thing was never efficient to produce and sell without making loses. The thing had clearly better hardware built in as it was built like a PC, sticking the best parts available.

they tried once to at least break even, here in mainland europe they launched it at 479 € price, 6 weeks later they dropped the price to 300€ to be even with the ps2 and gamecube.

The original xbox was probably a 800$ PC at the time.

This might work in Japan.
