Forums - Microsoft - Upgraded my Xbone with a 5TB external HDD

Lol I use the same one for my XB1! 5 TB of space should last me forever!

I like how it looks like a cute little baby Xbox One on top.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

The ones that need an outlet are better. They have another power source other than USB so the transfer rates are better and the load times should be faster i imagine.

Really? If that's the case I don't feel as bad about the other brand. I just hate the extra wires as the whole Xbox One with the cable box looks like a massive fire hazard.

I would prefer a separate power supply.  They are one of the most common things to go out.  And it wouldn't be putting extra stress on the Xbox One's power supply.

But that's probably just me being extra paranoid.

XD. Though I admit I will have to agree.

I don't have an Xbox One...but I did buy a 2 TB external and then remove the HDD itself and put it in my PS4. Took me maybe 15 minutes from taking the HDD out of the box to when the PS4 was good to go again.

Really no idea why Sony or Microsoft thought 500 gigs was going to be enough...

They were trying to keep the bottom line low. I can pretty much guarantee you I own more games than you and I have not had much of a problem with this. Sony made it very easy to upgrade the HDD in a PS4. An external is just to slow and I would not deal with it, USB 3.0 is only about half as fast as a SATA connection (in reality, on paper it is closer than that)

Nice stuff! I hope that can last the rest of this generation.

But serious....take that warning sticker off your xbox one!!! lol it's one of my pet peeves (if its considered one) xD

huh?

I dont think thats true.

All of my games are installed on the external HDD (the xbox one makes that your default unless you select otherwise I think) and all load faster now.

In theory, they should be pretty close. But in practice USB 3.0 has been shown to be a good bit slower than SATA III. Not really sure why...maybe there is just extra overhead with USB 3.0? Though I have heard that many USB 3.0 ports don't actually run at full speed.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Now that I know how much it torments you, this will never be removed from my Xbone.

May it haunt you forever....

If that is true then the XBOne is using older SATA connectors or sloooow HDDs. It is pretty much common sense, an outside port is ran by an inside port it is impossible for it to be faster. SATA handles much faster SSDs so it is not the choke point that would only mean it is a slow internal HDD

If I was going to get more/different storage I would get a 7200 RPM hybrid HDD and then turn the 500 GB HDD in the PS4 into an external drive. But for the most part the 5400 is sufficient

This is 100% accurate, as I said on paper USB 3.0 is not that much slower but in reality it writes at roughly half the speed as a 5400 RPM HDD on SATA

You actually have it backwards.  The HDD in the Xbox One and the PS4 push data at the same rate  3 Gbit/s (300 MB/s) transfer speed.  And the USB 3.0 on the Xbox One is faster than both at 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s).  Games on an extral HDD load fast as more data can be transfer over the same period of time.  Someone put a SSD external drive on an Xbox One and it ran even faster.

Also, if Sony had external USB 3.0 drives to the PS4 there is no reason not to assume an fast external drive would also run games quicker than the orignal HDD. (I am assuming a PS4 has USB 3.0.)

Notes:  USB 3.0 faster than internal: http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/05/26/xbox-ones-external-storage-can-improve-loading-times-with-games/

Someone tried a SSD in a PS4 with a little improvement: http://ps4daily.com/2013/11/ps4-ssd-upgrade/
