Monster Hunter 4G had a somewhat negative reaction in Japan, I believe, with a lot of people complaining it's literally just a DLC pack. Though obviously that doesn't stop the game selling well because obviously Monster Hunter is a phenomenom in Japan.
Amazon.jp has the PS3 (3.6/5) and PS4 (4/5) versions getting fairly decent user reviews, so seems alright. For comparison, Monster Hunter is on 2.2/5.
Some of it will be Metacritic-esque review trolling too, but I'd imagine some of that is true for Dragon Quest as well.
