Forums - General - Pioneer is going to make LCD TVs

Pioneer plans to stop production of plasma displays and are also going to move into the LCD arena. This is a sign that LCD seems to have won over plasma. I've always preferred LCD myself. You can make a case for both but the profit is better in LCD. Keep this in mind if you are planning to buy a plasma display because resell value will be really low if they plan to discontinue production of these displays.

What!?! Pioneer easily made the best Plasmas on the market.

Come to think of it, Samsung recently started making plasmas to compete with Pioneer. It looks like they'll have to compete no longer.

Edit: That's what I get for not actually reading the articles before psoting.

So Pioneer will still sell plasmas, only somebody else will be manufacturing the panels. A combined Pioneer + Panasonic plasma assault could hold of LCD yet.

it's a shame, I always found the plasma technology to be superior to that of LCD, plasma gave better colour gradients making the image more life like as well as having blacker blacks and having huge contrast ratios, although OLED is pretty much on the same level but it's just not wide spread enough nore are the screens big enough yet, but at least OLED is a great plasma replacemet.

Pioneer is no longer making plasma panels in-house, but they will still be buying them from others to continue makign them. Just because they are addign LCD and outsourcing the main plasma part doesn't mean they are done, yet.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

OLED far surpasses the capabilities of today's plasmas.  But yes, sadly the technology won't be ready for the mass market (with decent sizes, bulb life, and pricing) for a while.

Personally I think Pioneer has one foot out the door. I am holding out for OLED myself. Those displays are going to make Plasma and LCD look fat.

This is really sad.  As far as I'm concerned Pioneer made the best flat panel TV, not just the best plasma - those Kuro TV's were indeed in a class of thier own.
