Forums - Gaming - Layoffs at Daybreak Games (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) including director of development for Everquest

Very sad, but I feel this has been a long time coming, sale or no sale.

As part of a strategic decision to rationalize the business, Daybreak Game Company announced today that it will eliminate positions in both its San Diego and Austin studios. This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments, including delivering on its legacy of making top online games and establishing a solid foundation for future multi-platform success. These reductions will not affect the operation of current games and the company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future and push the boundaries of online gaming.

Good morning, my friends. Almost exactly six years ago today, I had just lost my job, I posted then, “So, if anyone needs a proper Dwarf…” and my adventure with SOE began.
Today I post again… so, if anyone needs a proper Dwarf…
I have been released from the best and most challenging job I have ever had. I thank you all for being part of that incredible experience. Too many people to thank personally, but know that I am extraordinarily grateful and very curious where life takes me now.

Yeah, I'm sorry folks but it's true. LM, eqn, eq and eqii are no longer guided by moi. Other dreamers will steer now.

Sad news, hope they are able to find a new job soon.

Seems like just the other day i was watching David Georgeson‏ unveil Everquest Next and Everquest Landmark. Everything seemed so hopeful at that stage. This guy seemed really passionate about the franchise as well...must be pretty sad about this.

Sucks for the people losing their jobs. Although that said, I hope Smedley gets sacked, I hate that guy!

what did he do?

This guy claims that he has heard that as much as 40% to half of staff got the boot

If that's correct we're talking hundreds of people who lost their jobs, I believe SOE/DG never detailed how much employees they had, but when SOE was sold someone on NeoGAF (I think it was NeoGAF) posted a picture of SOE at the time having anywhere from 501 to 1000 employees.  SOE's LinkedIn page says they had 501-1000 employees https://www.linkedin.com/company/sony-online-entertainment

Also seems to be affecting H1Z1's team, a Technical Designer got the boot

Stuff like this always happens after ownership changes hands.
My guess that after Planetside 2, neither PS4 nor XOne will see any of Daybreak games getting ported over. I expect H1Z1 for PS4 to get cancelled in the next three months.

When SOE was bought they explicitly said they were gonna work on Xbox and PlayStation games (and of course other platforms such as PC). Would be quite strange to change that course after 9 days.

Sony were right to get rid of it. The staff was bloated beyond belief to the point it severly hampered profitability

Is he the bulter? It sounds like a butler's name. "Fetch the tea and scones Smedley, there's a good fellow."
