Forums - PC - Including Sex, Avoiding The ‘Porn Game Ghetto’ — ‘The Witcher’

PC game The Witcher is kinda saucy! It's not a sex game, but a monster-slashing game — a monster-slashing game that allows players to have sex with hookers. Hello in-game nudity! According to Michal Kicinski, CEO of The Witcher developer CD Projekt:

In Europe we are quite used to see many forms of sexual expression in fine art, books, films and even on television. The games are not seen much differently then. In order to see sexual references or various forms of sexual acts (although softer ones) we never had to cross over into pay-per-view TV or head off to the seedy part of town.

If we stay within the limits of good taste, without being explicit, we had always known that whatever we showed in The Witcher would be acceptable for our target, mature audience without banning us to some kind of 'porn' games ghetto... We just want to let mature gamers — the audience we created the game for - play the game they want to play. At 18 years of age, you can walk into a store in the US and buy movies, magazines, etc. that have much more objectionable content than what you can see in The Witcher.

If The Witcher ended up on consoles, it'd either get the ESRB's "Adults Only" rating or have to be significantly toned down. The AO rating would mean that the game wouldn't be approved by console makers, and major retailers like Wal-Mart wouldn't carry it. There's obviously a double standard at work here — with movies getting greater freedom than games. Not exactly fair, is it?

Can't wait for it on X360.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It is fair for the game to be labeled AO if the game permits it. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo then have the option to say whether they want AO games on their consoles. They each have images to uphold, and so far, none of them want to be "the company that supports AO". If you think it's unfair, you should also be petitioning Blockbuster to bring pornography into the stores since it's the choice of the consumer and not the company.

The fact is, games are a relatively new media. Movies didn't contain torture-porn, nudity or queen size beds for married couples until many years after their creation. The taboos had to be broken slowly over time. As more games push the boundaries of the M-rating, more violence and nudity will find it's way into those games. Song lyrics did not start out raunchy. They became that way after many years of slow "progress"(if that's the right word for it).

The fact is, game companies and parents have seen how music and movie control has slipped through their fingers and don't want this new media of gaming to turn out the same way. As both a parent and a gamer I hear both sides of the argument and understand the points each bring up. The console makers hear these parents and politicians and realize that supporting nudity, extreme violence and similar material is a losing battle for them, considering most games that use them aren't any more artistic a game for it then Saw is an artistic film. When true maturity in gaming subjects starts breaking past the M-rating into the AO-rating we may start to see more of an from console makers to defend it.

Lol...just like Walmart can't sell unedited cd's but they can sell movies like Basic Instinct and American Pie, etc. Double standards.

Lol, it's pathetic. They just want to impress the granny's.

Oh well.

I'll probably pick up The Witcher for my ps3.

Not my kind of game at all. It's like an MMO... except you don't play with other people, which is kind of the whole reason MMOs are designed in the manner they are.

The Witcher has a great story, better than any RPG from last year. I can't see how people are comparing it to an MMO.

I bought this because almost everywhere its getting good reviews by users but so far kinda let down by one thing: This game's combat is sooo bad/boring.
Left mouse button click click click. rinse and repeat. Does it get any better as the game progresses???

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.
