Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: “Wii U Is Not Over Yet”

Nintendo is smart enough to not follow Sega's path. I'm 100% convinced that the next Nintendo home console is going to be released in 2017.

Hope this thread helps those who think there will be a new platform in 2016.

How does this change anything exactly? If the successor comes out next holiday, thats two full years of support. That's the definition of not over yet.

It shows that Nintendo is focused on supporting the Wii U rather than having it eclipsed by its successor in 2016. How can Nintendo support a console for 2016 release if many of their developers are burdened with Wii U titles? Why would they support Wii U if people will wait for the successor releasing at the end of the year?  Nintendo seems to have learned their lesson with how they treated the last few years of the Wii, and how they lost short-term brand appeal in the process. The only way a 2016 release is possible is if the "fusion" thing people have been running with happens. I'm not so convinced that this will be the case (although like with every handheld/console I suspect there will be a lot of interconectivity and probably a lot of games that can be played on both platforms.)

Good, I’m expecting a successor 2017 as things currently stand.

That doesn't have to mean that you are not furiously working on a successor, right? RIGHT?

Of course they are. Everyone is working on their successor. That is how the industry works. But Nintendo is smart and knows they need to keep supporting the Wii U because their true faithful followers are the ones who bought it and are supporting it. If they pushed another console out in 2016, that would totally piss those people off (myself included). They are being loyal to their loyal fans. I have had nothing but praise for the Wii U. It is truly a gem of a system with fantastic games that are just completely different and better than what others offer. I see 2017 E3 annoucning a new console available holiday 2017.

Iwata is my lord and savior; the Wii U is my holy grail. All aboard the hype train!

Yep. That's pretty much it. How are you not convinced? Nintendo already confirmed that that's the direction of their next platform.

Ugh. The fact that he has to reassure people that they won't discontinue their console after only 2 years on the market is pretty pathetic really...I love the Wii U but you cannot overstate how much of a disaster it's been for Nintnedo.

They are fucked if they wait until 2017 and mobile keeps up its growth rate. A 3ds successor needs to come out next year. Look how much sales slumped in their latest report.
