Forums - Nintendo - Wii U's Online Multiplayer Trifecta! Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. 4, Splatoon! Time to make a big deal about Free Online Play?

The problem is that both mario kart and smash bros have piss poor online modes compared to your normal online game on the other consoles. Seriously, 2 minute smash battles only??? I should be able to jump into various different match types if I want.

I disagree. MK8 and Smash online are lots of fun. 2 minutes is a little short but its not a big deal.

It's a massive deal. Most multiplayer games have playlists so you can play the mode you enjoy the most or mix it up every now and then. I dont particularly like time matches at all but Nintendo has decided for me. It's bare bones and pointless.

They have less games in general due to lack of third party, are you saying they shouldn't advertise at all? They have to work with what games they've got, and those three games are not the only ones using online rather the most pronounced.

Turf War is simply the primary mode and best way to highlight the game's unique mechanics. There's no way they wont atleast have the no brainer modes like Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Capture the Flag, etc.

I'm saying that the shouldn't advertise a feature with an obvious hole in it. Why would they brag about having free online when it's real world utility is so limited? They'll just get dogged on. Stick with advertising a good game, because they aren't competing when it comes to features.

You say there's no way, but when asked about other modes, all they said was that there would obviously be local co-op and a single player mode. They were very careful not to mention even the existence of more online modes.

Why? Why else? To get attention duh! They can advertise say Splatoon while making the free online a point, but of course not the entire thing.

Idk about them being very careful, but the mode was specifically called Turf War, so it'd be odd to give it a specific name if that was the only way to play, and the results screen includes a counter for kills and death, so at this point it would take literally no effort to get Team Deathmatch in there.

In a addition to what I said earlier, you can also set whatever rules you want when playing with friends.

Why advertise that when looking at XBLG and PS+ subscriptions people obviously have no problem paying for online. They would be preaching to people who want a robust network with the top online games and benefits. PS+ and GWG are literally giving you your money back and then some.

The fact that I can't just jump into a stock match playlist with randoms from launch is silly. Nintendo needs to get with the time and realise that robust online experience isn't just an extra these days but a necessity. It's how you foster communitys and long term customers.

Already answered that numerous times now! As for the rest of what you said, I'm sure most are fine with it, but you can't say they all are cause they're forced to pay for it if they wanna play online, and for those who want a secondary console, not having to pay for two online subscriptions is definitely a plus.

There's always been 1v1s, and Tournament mode among other features is on the way, this they said before the game even released, so you could have waited until then before picking it up.

I doubt they will advertise it much when their competitors have better online offerings for free aswell. I'm sure splatoon will be good like most ninty games but you should probably wait until you play it or it's reviewed before calling it amazing.

What?

The ps3 and 360 have free online and way more and better online games than the Wii U. Also with next gen you get2 free games a month for your 5$ a month subscription plus 2 more on the ps3 if you have it. That's better than free online and no free games.

The problem with this is that these 'free' games are worthless unless you continue to cough up for your subscription. And part of the reason that the Xbox One is selling poorly is that people aren't prepared to pay for two subscriptions every year and that the 'free' games available for the Xbox One have always been poorer in quality than the 'free' games available for the PS4.

The Wii U is the best console to own at the moment due to the size and diversity of its library and the high quality and number of exclusive titles. What it lacks in third party multiplatform titles it more than makes up with its exclusive library imo. The Wii U and PS4 or Wii U and PC combination is far more impressive than a PS4 and Xbox One or Xbox One and PC combination tbh.

Xbox One is not selling bad in any way.

Maybe not in the States, but it has been an unmitigated flop in Europe so far. Just because it isn't selling as badly as the Wii U doesn't mean that it's selling well. There are almost twice as many PS4s in homes than Xbox Ones.

This went from "Nintendo should promote Splatoon" to "I get better online services in my PSBOX consoles, no need for a Wii U because it has no games"... Facepalm.

I agree with TC. They could promote Splatoon and highlight the online part, as the Nintendo version of generic gray shooters. And with all honesty, I believe the game has great potential, and if it turns out to be a success.. It could very well become a franchise.

Most Nintendo related threads these days end up turning into a pissing contest :/

If Nintendo makes their games make you pay to be online than that is it for me and consoles, I will become a PC gamer, I should not have to do that,.

But Nintendo is smart enough not too, and I know it is a lousy move to play this card but... WII U GAMING MASTER RACE.

Really?  What if you pay 5$ a month and much more than that in decent free games?

What if somebody doesn't want those free games that are offered and wants to play online on the games they actually do want? Hell, I play on PC for free and still get quality free games. Got Metro 2033 free for liking it on facebook, can play a million F2P games that I actually want to play such as Path of Exile or Planetside 2 or if I were into DOTA games League of Legends, Dota 2, or Smite. Meanwhile I wouldn't have to pay for online, and I'm guaranteed that my online games will always be supported: either by official servers or private servers.
