I know a guy on Miiverse that has put in around 2,200 hours into Monster Hunter, im a hardcore gamer but even i gave up on Monster Hunter because i found it overwhelming.

That's the main reason I'm putting off getting Monster Hunter. 2,200 hours is insane and I'm sure that even at that point, there is still so much to do in it. I have free time, but not THAT much free time, lol. I still feel like it's a game I need to try eventually though (hoping 4 comes to Wii U eventually).

Xenoblade is quite a big game which i put tons of hours into, i had fun doing all the side quests and feeding my OCD for completion. However, i felt Monster Hunter was too much of a grind, and i went from being fun to being a bit of a slog. Dont let me put you off though, the game may be right up your street.
