And PS3 had to cut it's price $200 in a year to stay competitive. I'm not saying that the 360 WILL come back (though I will say I'm 90% sure the 2 will switch places a few more times), or that 360 will beat the PS3. But it's almost impossible to predict this kind of stuff. Hell, I wouldn't have predicted that a $400 PS3 would be on the market right now. I thought it would be damn near impossible due to cost. But here we are. If Sony could do a desperate move to get back sales, so can MS. It's far from a done deal. And obviously both are getting absolutely eclipsed by the Wii.

Nope. This is why Sony wins. They are a very good consumer electronics company competing in a consumer electronics market against a software company.

MS has no chance of beating Sony when it comes to reducing manufacturing costs of hardware. They are the new kids on the block when it comes to these kids of things, and Sony wrote the book on it.

It's what they do.

Be that as it may, MS isn't Sega. And MS isn't Sony. They have WAAAAAAAAAY more money. If you can't reduce costs (and there is no evidence that they can't), they can always take a small hit on their cash reserves to accomplish a price cut.

 Also, while you are correct that Sony is better at lowering costs, keep in mind that the 40GB intro was not accomplished by lowered production costs but rather a $3 billion IPO.

Keep in mind there was a time when 360 was outselling the PS3 for more than 14 weeks in a row. Things can change, and before the generation ends it's probably gonna flip back and forth a couple more times.

Keep in mind the 360 had a full year of sales with no competition, and MS blew it, its over for the 360, the PS3 will stay ahead for the rest of the generation. Next target: Nintendo Wii.

I hate that line of reasoning. The cheapest ps3 is still $130 more expensive than the cheapest 360, yet it still outsells it week to week.

Imagine if the Wii had cost $10,000 on launch day, but then dropped to $250 the very next day. Then everyone would be going, "yeah, it's in the lead, but it had to have $9,750 worth of price cuts to stay competitive, lulz."

The difference is that people don't mind the 40GB, but avoid the Arcade like a leper. For all intents and purposes, this battle is between the Pro and 40GB, and the Elite and 80GB.

They only dropped it $100, which is in line with what they did for PS2. This perception of desperation exists only because the PS3 wasn't fast out of the gate. Sony understood that they needed to drop the price as soon as possible, but it was simply costing them too much. They waited half a year of bad press to do it, which I think showed great patience considering the situation. They tried to wait for software, which didn't arrive en masse until the fall and winter. Anyway, 1/6th the price is not a major price drop. Don't ignore than you could get a PS3 for $500 at launch. The 20GB PS3 was better than the 40GB PS3 is right now, too.

I dont understand this "MS will make a comeback once GTA4 hits"babble. Correct me if im wrong but...gta4 is multiplatform...right? Its not like the 360 version comes day and date with the DLC. I see it boosting hardware sales for both consoles, not just the 360.

That is true, too. I woulld only buy the elite, personally, and if you watch movies that's a terrible deal...not even gettng to hard ware problems and paying for live and no wireless, etc...

But why would they want to?  They've lost well over $6 bil. since they first created the Xbox brand, and have only recently (with the release of Halo 3) started making a profit each quarter.  They have pointed at 2008 to be the year of profitibility for over two years now, and they have constantly been reassuring their stockholders that the 360 is a viable product.  They are past the point of dipping into the red, and will not do so again until the launch of the next Xbox.

When they'll drop the price next, I can't say, but I can guarantee that they won't go into the red to do so.  Personally, I'm feeling a $50 price cut right before GTAIV hits, which would definitely put the hurt on Sony, GT5P or not.

 60GB $599 -> $499
20GB $499 -> $399

60GB replaced by 80GB $499
20GB replaced by 40GB $399

The PS3 really has only had a $100 price cut, look at MS they have 4 different SKUs on the market Core, Arcade, Premium, Elite, shoot is there even a difference between the Core and Arcade? Have you looked at MS marketing skeem for Windows? They love to do things confusing, and like stated, this is Sony's playing field, they wrote the book, and they have tricks up their sleeve (Some didn't quite work out very well), Microsoft can't even learn from their own mistakes. It's a done deal, the 360 might pull forward a week or two every once in awhile due to releases, but PS3 is pretty much gauranteed to stay on top.

MS makes a 50 dollar cut then Sony counters with a 100 dollar one. Sony wins and is now cheaper. GG thanks for playing 360.

MS makes 100 dollar cut Sony follows. Now sony is at a great price and more buyers will be interested. Sony pulls ahead.

MS doesn't drop price and neither does Sony. Things stay the same.

The longer MS waits the more they are screwing themselves. Just gives Sony longer to sell even.

All three systems are doing well this year. Wii may have the biggest increase in unit sales this year but PS3 will have the biggest percentage increase. It will certainly take 360 in Europe and maybe even in the UK. There is a chance PS3 could take Wii in Europe by 2010 or so. I am still not sure if PS3 can ever move out of last place in America, though. Certainly, PS2 will have to die, first.

Either way, I am glad PS3 sales are up and I hope another round of 360/PS3 price cuts happens. I'd also like to see PSP/DS price cuts to expand the handheld market.

Is there any particular reason why people think Sony can afford to drop the PS3's price quicker than Microsoft can drop the Xbox 360's?
