I hate that line of reasoning. The cheapest ps3 is still $130 more expensive than the cheapest 360, yet it still outsells it week to week. Imagine if the Wii had cost $10,000 on launch day, but then dropped to $250 the very next day. Then everyone would be going, "yeah, it's in the lead, but it had to have $9,750 worth of price cuts to stay competitive, lulz." |
They only dropped it $100, which is in line with what they did for PS2. This perception of desperation exists only because the PS3 wasn't fast out of the gate. Sony understood that they needed to drop the price as soon as possible, but it was simply costing them too much. They waited half a year of bad press to do it, which I think showed great patience considering the situation. They tried to wait for software, which didn't arrive en masse until the fall and winter. Anyway, 1/6th the price is not a major price drop. Don't ignore than you could get a PS3 for $500 at launch. The 20GB PS3 was better than the 40GB PS3 is right now, too.
