Well, that makes this whole thing a bit silly because we are basing it off of something that almost certainly can't be right.  I appreciate the work that ioi does, but I think its silly for people to make real world predicitons based on his estimates.  God bless him, but how can we expect him to be accurate on a wolrdwide scale... or even as you say a US scale when there are so many factors and retailers (including online).  Its an incredible undertalking.

Seriusly true... even with the number's confirmed by NPD, we have still a huge margin of error in some month...

The Wii is called a fad despite being up YoY in its first year so I don't see why a console that is struggling to be flat YoY can't, unless term coiners decide to show their true colors and add a "it's only a fad if Nintendo makes it" clause.


What that have to do with being a fad? A fad is explosive in it's grow and equally explosive it's its rapid implosion, while failing to set an standard, like the Wii. That's all there is to it pretty much. Have the Wii had a softer decline or successfully stablished motion controls at least for Nintendo consoles, then it wouldn't be a fad but it indeed was a fad.

The bad wii u sales and the poor last few years of the Wii has proven it to be a fad.  Motion controls are not significant in gaming anymore.

I don't see how going from best launch ever and supply constrained to worse sales than any home console last gen in a year doesn't qualify.

You could say that the record breaking rate of sales was a fad. But PS4 is not a fad, yet. It's still the market leader by a huge margin, so it can only be a fad if it suddenly becomes the worst selling console of the generation, like Wii did (yearly not LTD). You can't judge an entire generation like this in the space of 18 months. And calling the generaton leader a fad when it is well on the way to 50% market share is nonsense.
