Forums - Sony - Sonys american Reign has ended.

Well, it depends on what you consider winning though. I would expcet the PS3 and 360 to each reach 40 million at least, which is a lot better than any two "losing" consoles have ever done. And at 40 million, they'll be able to sell a good amount of software, so they should get good games. But you could also consider the fact that the industry is growing, thus giving them more room to sell. If the Wii reaches 120 million it'll get a majority of the games.

I would hardly the GC a loser, at least in the sense it was profitable for Nintendo. But it didn't get a lot of games, and that's bound to happen for the HD consoles as the Wii userbase grows beyond 50% marketshare, and with more users than the others combined, cheaper development costs, it's just bound to be the winner when it comes to games. But that doesn't mean the PS3/360 are "losers," it just means they aren't on the same level, so to speak.

I wasn't completely talking about winners and losers, I was just saying, until we know where the Wii sales will level off at, it's hard to know if the PS3 has or has not made any real strides to beating the Wii in sales. And we wont know that until supply is figured out, which, with Brawl, Mario Kart, and WiiFit being released in NA/Others in the next few months, it might not happen anytime soon.

Well from what we have agreed on here we can say that the PS3 selling significantly better is very important then. We both agree that a greater userbase means more games, and more sales also means more games. Its absolute relevance is still up in the air admittedly, but it can only be good for Sony to have that many more PS3s selling. That is definatly more note worthy than what this post was started about.

They assumed that it was understood you realize they were talking about the match between 360 and PS3, just because every single post doesn't lick Wii's nut sack doesn't mean they're ignoring it's amazing sales, it simply means that they have decided to focus on the battle between two other competitors while assuming that the Wii is winning overall.

Oh fanboys, you do so make me laugh. When someone says "PS3 is winning worldwide," or "Well, we're still winning ww. [Without Japan]," or "Europe is Sony's turf yet again. It has serious competition in Japan ( Wii ) and America though ( Wii & 360 )," then it is not impied at all they are talking only between 360 and PS3. This is not about how every post "doesn't lick Wii's nut sack." It is about people making blatantly false claims. Saying a console is winning while being outsold by another console is a blatantly false claim.

So what do you assume then?....because whenever someone says "Wii has the highest userbase" I could be an ass and remind them that the PS2's is higher, but I don't because I assume they were talking about Wii having the highest userbase among the current generation of consoles and not the highest userbase of any console still in use.

Here I'll try an example.....this is like two people having a conversation on which game was better between GHIII and RB, and you come in and say that SMG was better than both. Yes it is a well known fact that SMG is a better game, atleast if you are basing your opinion on critical acclaim, but that was not relevant to the current conversation

note: I understand that my example also has him coming in on a question about two games in the same genre by adding in a game from a different genre, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out two Wii games that people would debate but that SMG would definitely be better than.

...

Yeah, I'm also getting tired of the fact that PS3 vs. 360 debates have to suck up to the Wii every single time (no pun intended).

If we are going to bring the Wii to the table on every single debate, why not bring in the PC as well? They are all competing for gamers' money. Some people are just going to need to realize that markets are expanding.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

I assume what has previously been mentioned in the conversation is relevant. The original post compares all three of the consoles so I am forced to assume all three are relevant to the conversation. More-over, when people start comparing sales it generally includes the entire current generation. If the first post had been "Sony loses its reign as HD console number 1," I would not have mentioned the Wii at all. The Wii was referenced in the OP, and one of the quotes I provided for you. It was very much involved in the general discourse.

Also, GH3 and SMG are both better than RB on the Wii. Mostly because RB is not out yet, but I think there might be other factors one day. It is hard to tell though since I don't know if there will be any technical problems with the game. I bet there are some annoyances with the downloadable extra content.

I can understand and respect that. When people start off by talking about HD consoles I will not bring up the Wii unless it seems directly relevant (which is exceedingly rare). The OP referenced the Wii though. This thread was not started as a comparison between the 360 and the PS3. It never had a post saying lets only use HD consoles. The Wii was brought up and directly relevant to the conversation. This was a comparison of all 3 consoles.

I agree, build quality is important, well to Sony anyway.

To the wii fans out there, it is as simple as this, if the PS3 was the same price (in europe especially) as the Wii it would easily compete with sales and probably outstrip them as you would be getting more for your money. Remember there is only so many ways you can wave your hands and so many perephirels you can store under your TV. Nintendo more addons than anyone = more money

Yes build quality was very important to Sony with the PS2.

Only so many ways to wave your hands?  What about only so many ways to hit buttons?  If we are going to ignore the content of the games, I could point out that with a wavebird, a Wii can do the same controls as the PS3.

Come to think of it, your right.  I spend tons of money on accessories.  So I guess the moral is, that the Wii is essentially the same price as the PS3 and still kills it in sales.  So if you lowered the PS3 price enough below the Wii it may be able to compete.  Because it has more features (i.e. 1 more feature blu ray).

Thank you. I've heard that argument about the "repetitive" nature of Wii controls before and it gets annoying. Sure it's repetitive to have such basic waggle thrown into games but I don't mind. I've played video games for over 15 years and i'm getting tired of hitting a to jump.

I remember reading a post where somebody said they didn't like the Wii's approach because if all companies didn't try to push the graphical limits games would be less immersive and you wouldn't feel as "pulled in" to the game if it didn't wow you by looking better and better. Obviously the Wii can't pull you in on textures alone like the PS3/360 can but I think the controls more than make up for it. For years we've been hitting A to swing a baseball bat and live out our fantasy of winning the world series. Now I want to swing the bat!

Just as a last note as a Harry Potter fan i've given the games a try and they are not my taste at all. Obviously they are built for a younger crowd and are far more simple with puzzles so basic they become tedious. However I finally found one I enjoyed. Order of the Pheonix on Wii since you wave the Wiimote as a wand. It seems so simple yet is so fullfilling to wave it in a particular manner based off of the spell you want to cast and have Harry cast it. ... Too bad the game is still too easy.

haha great argument of if the ps3 was the same price as the wii. that one made me laugh. i'm also sure that if a super computer console from the future that is 100x as powerful as the current hd consoles and could do your laundry cost as much as the wii it would probably sell pretty darned well too.

pretending what would happen if a far too expensive piece of electronics was half its current price and then comparing its hypothetical sales to the actual sales of a competing product at its real price is just hilarious for its stupidity. tkc-muzzer, i congratulate you. good job all around.

and cleveland124 nice argument about only so many ways to hit buttons to trash tkc's other incredible stupid point.

and yes since wii was mentioned to start this thread then it was included in the discussion.

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus

Proud owner of wii, gamecube, xbox, ps2, dreamcast, n64, snes, genesis, 3DO, nes, atari, intellivision, unisonic tournament 2000, and gameboy

Just to go with the price thing though.  Ignore other accessories.  The Wii was made for multiplayer gaming.  Wii tennis may be a simple tech demo, but with 4 people of similiar levels it is amazing.  As such what I paid for my base Wii set-up:

Wii $250; 3 extra controllers $120; 1 extra nunchuck $20

Total Wii base: $390

If I chose to get a PS3 today (I'm waiting for a price drop or a better bundle):

PS3 $299 (on Sonystyle, I'm all about the cheap); 1 additional controller (all I've needed for traditional gaming consoles) $50

Total PS3 base: $350

So I don't think price has as big as people think.  Although launching at $600 certainly killed some PS3 buzz, we've seen time and time again that price drops only pick you up for a short period of time.  It's only recently when blu ray won and a better game selection was out, and the PS2 only got Wii ports that it has started taking off.
