Can someone explain to me the hype about this game?

It seems like the game version of a cheap teeny horror flick sprawling with age old tropes.

I can understand the amount of growing interest for this game since the mechanics seem solid so far but at the same time I also share the same sentiment as you do about the way it tells the story ...
