Nintendo should switch their focus from hardware to software. As a software company Nintendo would be bigger than ever before.

nintendo going forward will have low selling consoles but games that could sell boatloads. I've always said that for nintendo to stay relevant they needed to invent the handheko themsekves back when it came out. They were too stubborn to enter the mobile market then and prob didn't even dream up a device anything like it. Sadly for them at the time the DS was on it's way to be the second highest consoles ever. The iphone caused a major shift and even if they straight away partner with google and made a rival to the iphone they'd be in a better place today.

Either they try break into the market now whixh is very hard or they go software and rake in millions. Pokemon and the like would make ridiculous money on iphones and androids especially in japan. They have a long console history so it must be too hard to let go. It will be their downfall if they don't. ANd how will that bother 3DS fans? Most of you anyway will have a smartphone or could get one as a result. You'll still get your games and nintendo will make even more money.

As for the home console. The Wii was a fluke thanks to the motion controls. That has come and gone. Gamecube and Wii U are their natural level of sales and with Sony flying so high and MS willing to spend crazy money to stay relevany I can;'t see them squeexing back in with a traditional console. If they want to sell big numbers again they need to dream up another fad. THe obvious answer would be VR but SOny, Facebook and MS are all a few steps ahead there.

Maybe their next console will be an Oculis rift type thing and it will capture the worlds imagination once again. I just don't see it happening.

iPhone - 500 Million

Samsung Galaxy S - 200 Million

All-in-all, as of 2014, there has been shipped more than 1 Billion smartphones WW

Tablets only in 2013 - 195 Million

Nintendo should slowly enter the mobile market with well known franchises like Mario, Zelda and Pokemon.

Re-release the games from the GB, GBA & DS era - $0.99-2.99
Re-release the games from the NES, N64 & GC era - $3.99-5.99

Release games for PS4, Xbox One & PC - $39.99-59.99

According to VGC's numbers:

New Super Mario Bros. U sold 4.32 million, if released on PS4, Xbox One & PC, they could potentially have sold 10+ million.
Mario Kart 8 sold 3.01, if released on PS4, Xbox One & PC, they could potentially have sold 10+ million.
Super Mario 3D world sold 2.39,  if released on PS4, Xbox One & PC, they could potentially have sold 5+ million
New Super Luigi U sold 1.81,  if released on PS4, Xbox One & PC, they could potentially have sold 5+ million

You get where I am going.

But, most important of all, merchandise! Just look at Angry Birds.

agreed. and if they released a new pokemon on smartphones they wouldn't sell it for $4.99 like some said to you. They would sell it at like $30. All the nintendo fans and some more iwll pay that considering it's a full pokemon game they usually pay more for and then as the game gets cheaper more and more people buy it who wouldn't have otherwise. Eventually after a few years it would be $4.99. Its actually scary the money Ninty could make this way and so many of their top games are suited to mobile. They will prob be too stubborn though, a bit like Sony with some of their divisions. Must be a Japanese thing lol

$4.99 for a new game would be stupid of course :D

If they hired us, Nintendo would rule the world ;)

True, we are very knowledgable beings. Anyone who hired us would surely rule the world be it MS, Sony, Ninty you name it.

I stopped reading when you said Smash Bros sold only 481k in 2 days globally. The game just came out in Europe yesterday, and is not even in Japan.

"I think it will be the HDS"-Me in regards to Nintendo's next handheld.

more people are buying ps4 and xbox one now because they're more popular, hate to say it but it'll take a lot of effort for Nintendo to become 'the norm' again

I agree. Been saying for awhile that Nintendo's biggest problem is perception. There is just this ridiculos rhetoric that its for kids and the others consoles are just more popular based on peer presure. There are too many people saying that the game pad is trash, a gimmic, or its stupid and they haven't even used one. All based on rhetoric.

Sorry, but Nintendo tried to catch lightning in a bottle twice. They lucked out that they started a craze with the Wii mote and were able to release a deliberately underpowered consoles. They tried it again with the Wii U thinking everyone would jump at it because it has a touch screen and a weak console. Lightning didnt strike.  Nintendo will limp along a few more years and really faces a dilemma what do do.  There is nothing they can do fast.  Only thing I think they can do is release a new state of the art console in 2017 or 2018 when Sony and MS will not be even considering new consoles.  Ok one other thing and the most sensible thing.  Stop making consoles all together and do what Nintendo does best and just make games.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Tired of hearing people say drop the gamepad, its what makes the U what it is, sure not a lot of games use it, but certain games would become unplayable, i for one love the off tv play, and games like ZombiU, Deus Ex, Game&Wario etc, plus use it to browse the internet/miiverse.

Totally. Its what i use the most on my Wii U. At night in bed i can play something or more importantly go on the internet with the awesome browser. I often come here on VGchartz at night on my Wii U.

This wouldnt be possible without the gamepad. I would have to suffer through the Vita's now slow and almost unusable browser (for heavy pages like VGC).

With the release of Super Smash Bros. U in the US the Wii U's weekly amount of units sold globally is at 149k the week ending November 22 and SBBU sold 481k in the span of two days globally. Don't get me wrong, this is fantastic and the fastest selling Wii U game to date. With all the news about how it is selling like crazy in Europe is great as well and I'm pretty sure it will sell well in Japan. I project global sales to be at around 1 million next week and I predict Wii U to be at around 450k units sold next week but is that enough? When you have the XB1 selling better than the Wii U when SSBU comes out worldwide that is not a good sign. The Wii U is struggling but not like how the Dreamcast struggled. The Dreamcast had no support from Sega but the Wii U has support from Ninty. Or does it?

My point from all this is just explaining how Nintendo should deal with the mess the Wii U caused. Yes Nintendo has yet to reveal Amiibo numbers but what else do they have? They have top quality games but they need to attract third parties, buy other companies, outsource their IPs and simply sell more units.

Attracting third parties is a hard one but acquisitions aren't. They have a decent amount of money. Enough to buy companies like Capcom or Ubisoft. They can outsource their IP's to companies like Platinum Games or Namco. They need to advertise more.

So I have two questions:

1) Why are more people buying PS4 and XB1?

2) What do you think Nintendo could do to turn this thing around?

EDIT: I had Wii U at 200k units for next week but I forgot about Black Friday so I changed it to 450k

To answer your questions:

The reason people are buying either system is because it's clear that both of those systems are technically more capable, both are easier to develop for, offer much more resources for developers, they also come packed with far bigger hard drives as standard, they have major 3rd party support and both offer better online features.

The online is about the only factor that can be improved as far as the benefits both PS4 and Xbox One have over the Wii U, without building a new console or updating the Wii U's hardware. Nintendo are stuck with the platform they have as far as CPU, GPU and RAM goes, they could offer a free HDD and a USB cable with all Wii Us going forward. They can drop the price of the Wii U, get rid of the 8GB model and say offer the 32GB model for much closer to the price of the 8GB system. Make a model of the Wii U with better storage capacity or even a model with a built in bigger HDD.

Nintendo needs to offer a more diverse line-up of games that people can't get on PS4 or XBox One. If they can't handle the workload internally then create better relationships with external studios and have them work on a set of new IPs. Nintendo doesn't have many mature action games, nothing like Uncharted, God of War, Gears, they miss out on the likes of Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Bioshock, so they need to make games like those, to cater to that crowd of gamers, only unique to Nintendo, so they can claw that audience back to their platforms. They loose on all of the sporting franchises on a regular basis, they don't have anything like Gran Turismo or Forza.

Nintendo's line-up is always to the extremes, either deeply family oriented, very casual or extreme mature, there's very little the fits in between. It all takes itself too seriously IMO, which is fine for the audience that buys Nintendo's systems, but it doesn't let Nintendo branch out.

Major hits take too long too be released, so Nintendo has very little to fill those gaps in the line-up when they need those kinds of games. Nintendo has a lot of IPs they should also milk more on their home consoles, like Pilot Wings, Star Fox, Metroid and F-Zero. They've never done a home console version of a huge open world Pokemon game, even though it's clear it would sell like hot cakes.

There's such great potential in a Kingdom Hearts style Nintendo universe game, especially with Amiibo now.

As a side point I never understood why Nintendo never tried to make a load of movies based around their major franchises, a Zelda film, made in a similar style to Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings would be awesome, a CG mario movie, Live Action Metroid film. Hell Nintendo could have been as big as Disney if they had tied a movie studio into the company and maybe built a theme park, holiday resort. These kinds of business decisions would only serve to boster the game business because the audience would be much larger as a result and way more Nintendo home consoles or hardware in general would sell.

Nintendo has missed so many opportunities that are clear too me. They could still make such things become a reality and expand the business gradually, by creating a few new IPs this gen, the likes of Splatoon are a start, but Nintendo needs to do more in the way of their game line-up to fill the gap they're missing.

They need to start listening to the wider gaming community, maybe run a survey to anyone will to comment and actually take that feedback to heart.

After the new one releases I don't. I like to trade them in a bit before the new ones release. I don't want to go back and play an inferior game when I have a better newer version.

so newer is allways better? how much of a improve was ghosts? and why u wanna sale a good game? or is it ust a fad that gets u every year because of massive hype/ads?

Usually yeah, newer is better. I'm a big fan of sports games and having all the updated rosters is definitely better than being a year or two behind.

As for selling them, I sell most of my games. Story games when I've completed them, annual games when the new one releases and there is no more reason to go back to the old one. The only games I don't sell are those that I think are the very best games ever, I wouldn't count annual games in there simply because there will always be a newer better version.

Nope, it isn't just a fad that gets me with hype/ads. I play them and enjoy them... alot!

surely not, are u changing your phone every launchday too?
