It's called progression, and progression comes with it's fair share of bumps in the road.
And besides, a good 95% of games still work perfectly fine in singleplayer / local coop when the console is offline.
Lastly, there are no always online consoles this generation, the WiiU isnTt, the PS4 isn't, and the Xbox One isn't, so the complexity of servers, isp, routers and so forth is a non issue and just seems like its being dragged out for no real reason at all, most people simply plug in their console, to their tv, and play it with a controller, online functionality for them is simply a case of connecting the network cable or putting in their wifi details, if theres an internet issue, be it the isp or the gaming network, theres no analog troubleshooting about it at all, its simply "it works" or "it doesnt work".
