Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 DRM issue - What exactly is going on?

Maybe people don't know that you can re-download the stuff you already paid for to be able to use it offline again? (i.e. uninformed)

lol your not supposed to send in your hard drive.
but you see, ms basically owns your dlc.

also to the peopel who own a 360, has any of your discs been scratched or marked in the form of a circle? that happend to my gears and my halo dunno y.

Captain -

Your disks can get scratched like that if you move your console while it's playing a disk. I had a friend move my 360 recently with Rock Band in the system (playing it).....And killed the disk.

I about died when he said there was a disk error...

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

lol. my first game was gears of war and my mom tried to take the console away cuz i wouldnt stop playing online, then i heard this sound: "erchhhhhhhhhhhhh", then the framerate dropped and i got that dreaded messagge . i asked her to buy me a new gears and shes like no. i cried. never told any1 this b4 lol.

I think they really should follow DRM model used by Apple iPod.  I think that's would be a good solution.  I think however MS didn't really plan this well and they can not easily implement it.  From reading about this issue it seems they have someone manually reassign the DRM right .... for software giant like MS it seems really backward way of doing thing.

If not for DRM, I would have bought a lot more Live arcade title (so may be that's a good thing).

people just need a reason to complain... I see nothing wrong with needing to re-download it especially for free. Otherwise there would be massive issues with people getting stuff for free and prices would have to be jacked up to compinsate

Quite true. If people didn't complain about the DRM, they would bitch about wasting bandwidth on downloads they already have.

DRM in general is hated by people and anything which appears to be a problem related to DRM becomes a major bitchfest ... Personally, I dislike DRM and am disapointed that few companies realize that it is impossible to produce an unbreakable DRM system (you have to produce an encryption format which allows the receiver to "read" a message without allowing the receiver to "read" the message) but I won't waste time complaining about it.

If the problem is as easy to fix as you claim it is then I think that these people's complaints are unreasonable though ...

Exactly. It may be easy-ish to fix in this case, but there will be at least some problems with the service forever, especially after Xbox 360 or Live support ends. DRM in general is bad precisely because it is certain the issues of hardware-locking, random denial, support ending causing problems and overly complex distribution systems, and it still doesn't deter the knowledgeable pirate to a large extent.
