Forums - Sony - Sony executive explains why you can't change your PSN name

Just charge for it and that will solve the problem.

If you block/blacklist someone and they change their name, the account holder should remain blocked.

If it is like what I said above, then I see no problem. Just charge a fee for it.

Don't bother with an answer if your answer is awful and ends up raising even more questions. Just going by the response in this thread to this article the solutions are obvious and simple so if there really is no 'technical reason' the request to name change is not going to go away, especially as MS have offered it for ages with no issues.

OMG! That's where I'm currently living.

As for the excuse... lame. I don't buy it for a second.

Does anyone here know anything about databases? "Just charge money for it." isn't not their reason for not allowing it.

I remember reading another interview or something where they said they can't change it. From what I understand they used the PSN name as the unique key, I think. From this it's connected to everything else, trophies, downloads etc. Your email address can change so they fixed the PSN name.

Hmm, pie.

And that can be changed (albeit, not easily). Or, as a "hack job", just create an additional field for a secondary name which is displayed to end users.

If that's true, though, that was an exceptionally poor design choice. Amateur and short-sighted.

EDIT: A poster already stated that this functionality exists in Japan. Whatever the technical issue is, they already have a solution for it.

sounds like our account name is PK in all their database-tables, so they would have to add a mapping table + migrate all their old db entries

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

They forget that Microsoft used name changing to their advantage by charging people 800 MS points to make the change. Yeah, it's still open to griefers, but I sincerely doubt there are many people willing to spend 10 bucks every time they want to piss someone off in a video game.

You'd be surprised. :P

The thing is, that doesn't happen. Because if you report or block someone, they stay blocked when they change their name because its tied to a Microsoft account email.
