I remember reading another interview or something where they said they can't change it. From what I understand they used the PSN name as the unique key, I think. From this it's connected to everything else, trophies, downloads etc. Your email address can change so they fixed the PSN name.

And that can be changed (albeit, not easily). Or, as a "hack job", just create an additional field for a secondary name which is displayed to end users.

If that's true, though, that was an exceptionally poor design choice. Amateur and short-sighted.

EDIT: A poster already stated that this functionality exists in Japan. Whatever the technical issue is, they already have a solution for it.
