And that can be changed (albeit, not easily). Or, as a "hack job", just create an additional field for a secondary name which is displayed to end users.
If that's true, though, that was an exceptionally poor design choice. Amateur and short-sighted.
EDIT: A poster already stated that this functionality exists in Japan. Whatever the technical issue is, they already have a solution for it.
