Yeah, they don't want to alienate the existing 3DS customer base, but they also want as many of those customers to upgrade their system. So they need to tread the line between forcing people to upgrade unwillingly (which alienates the customer) and not giving people a reason to upgrade at all (which carries an opportunity cost).

So what they'll do is effectively phase out 3DS titles over the next 2 years.

Ironically, I expect them to announce their new console at E3 2017 so that'll be interesting as well.


Yeah, but Nintendo doesn't want to piss off almost 50 million regular 3DS users. And making a console for just two years (2015-2017) would be lethal to peolpe's  trust in Nintendo handhelds. They will keep supporting the machines until they get replaced by the 9º gen  handheld, 2019-2020.



You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well, the DSi got hundreds of titles, even this year new DSi titles were released. Something similar might happen for N3DS.


DSi and 3DS are not comparable. The unique features of the N3DS (More powerful, 2nd stick) will not lend themselves to small or app like games which is what most DSi exclusive content was.

Its not a new generation of console so doesn't need its own specific support, its just has the capacity to have exclusive titles. They will offer enough titles to help push N3DS hardware that bit further but I expect a lot of ports, nothing that will stretch Nintendo's internal teams.
