Let me change the words a little: it's the third game on a series (or maybe a "sub-series"?), and the first game on a different series.

Yes, the wife and I play it often, we're both level 70 and into paragon points doing rifts.  I think it made huge improvements with the updates the did to fix looting system though.

Your hint confused me in the sense that, if I am not mistaken, Final Fantasy 3 was Final Fantasy 1 in the rest of the world, back in the day :P

You are mistaken actually. What americans knew as Final Fantasy III was actually Final Fantasy VI.

Final Fantasy I had the same name worldwide (though it did release 3 years later on the US).

The only wild, wild guess I can take is Shin Megami Tensei. One of those branches I hardly know anything about. Like Persona, Devil Survivor or Soul Hackers.

Nah, it's nothing OBSCURE really. It's just a game that people don't give a shit about. It actually spawned from one of the biggest franchises in gaming.
