Reading 10000000000000 billion year old texts and trying just to interpret it the wrong way is nonsensical. I mean ever heard of chinese whispers? Everyone knows how bad the original message can fuck up with just 3 or 4 people. Now compare that to reiligion with 1 million people translating from different languages and dialects and then there is wars some of the text got lost and people tried to restaurate the lost stuff. Then some wannabee cool people added stuff just for the lulz and others didnt like some stuff that was written down centuries ago and so removed that etc Religion is good but only if you just follow the "plausible/good/nice/ethical etc" rules. |
A a counter point to what your saying, some might say that you have to take the good with the bad. If you honestly believe it's the word of god then how can you decide to ignore some parts and still claim to adhere to that faith?
While I agree with you 100% that people should disregard any text, religious or otherwise, that instructs them to act in what they consider an immoral way I don't know how to respond to the above other than saying "why believe any of it?".

One doesn't need to believe in the writings of the bible, or the quran, or the gospel of the flying spaghetti monster, to know that certain teachings make sense. The ten commandments is a pretty decent place to start. I think most "good" people can agree that there is very little wrong with those.
I sure as hell am not religious. I don't believe what is written in any of those books. I would never let it run my life. But hidden in there beneath the smiting and the flooding are some good rules to live by. It certainly isn't the worst thing to come about from religion.
